Go have a cold shower? Stop looking at them as objects and try to get to know their personalities?

silly question but do you have your windows/doors open? do you mean they are getting into the house?

Well in my meaner days i'd say an aerosol can and a match - but that's very dangerous and stupid

Around this way there's a noticable lack of them this year - I've only seen 3 so far this year (normally it'd be half a dozen every night).

There's also been an almost total lack of wasps too - I don't think I've actually seen one all summer. :dozey:

Find your nearest airsoft shop.
Buy the following:

M203 grenade launcher
165 rnd shower shell
Can of green gas (propane)

Charge the shower shell with green gas and load it into the M203.
Aim at offending insect and pull trigger.
Works well with flies as they don't see it coming.

No insects were harmed in the making of this video

I've noticed that too!
Think I've only seen 1 wasp

I have only really seen one wasp, and all 'it' was concerned with, was shredding an old wooden bench of a few fibres to chew up & make a nest, somewhere .....

we get too many starlings for crane flies to be a problem - the birds eat the 'leather jackets' i.e. crane fly larvae :)

Well like most spiders, daddy long legs (the spider not the cranefly) has fangs.
It's actually very potent stuff, but thankfully it's fangs can't break our skin

Thankgoodness they cant kill you.
Luckily none have come in to my room lately.
They are attracted to light too like Moths so keep the lights low.

Thats sounds like a very good idea Millay.
I might have to get some of those for next year as I'd love to sleep with the windows open and not have insects coming in at night.

A good old fashioned fly swat! (You can never catch a fly with one but crane flies are easy peasy)!

Matth

I have a "joke" flyswat that's made to look like a 5 1/4" floppy disk (solid, and with the hole in the middle).
Absolutely useless against anything else, but great for giving craneflies a taste of the speed of flight they'd never enjoy under their own power.

What a bunch of wimps you lot are.I grew up having to shake out my footwear in the mornings in case of scorpions hiding in them. What the hell can a daddy long legs do to you lot. They can't bite you and they can't even fly away fast enough. :erm:

If I find any hanging around the lights I just catch 'em and put them out the window.

I bet you all regret all those spiders you killed this summer too. They would have sorted the problem for you in no time.
;)

No, the answer is a piece of tissue* and pressure from your fingers ;)

Just to clarify

Daddy longlegs (a spider)

Cranefly (an insect)

Totally unrelated to each other, but I'm sure you all already knew that :)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/horse_racing/4220322.stm

A serious fall that injured jockey Pat Dobbs was caused by a weakening of the turf around the five-furlong mark.

This is believed to be due to grass roots being eaten by an infestation of the larval stage of the crane fly, more often known as "daddy-long-legs".
