View Full Version : ears - not for the faint hearted
Does anyone know anything about ears and throats?
I have an odd question.
I ate a sweet earlier that was bright pink. Then I cleaned my ears with cotton wool buds and the cotton wool came out exactly the same shade of pink.
How did the colouring get from my mouth to my ears? Am I to expect other foods I have eaten to start appearing in my ears?
Any advice/information would be appreciated.

you should mention it to your GP - while it is possible the colour became absorbed in your blood or lymphatic circulations, any 'unusual' discharge from the ear should be checked out, in my (not medically qualified) opinion, that is ;)
Your throat and ears are actually linked, this is why sucking a sweet on an aeroplane helps equalise the pressure in them.

Thats right.....they are linked by the eustachian tube.

Thanks for the advice. :) But I think the fact that it was flourescent pink as was the sweet is too much of a coincidence to be anything serious.
I just find it odd!
It also links to your eyes too (which is how most people catch colds/flu) hence why you get these people who can spray milk from their eyes after taking a mouthful, pinching their nose and blowing!

slightly OT but did you happen to watch "Tarrant on TV" last night?

No, currently working 5 nights in a row so missed it
Then again.......the inner and outer ear are seperated by the tympanic membrane so the dye shouldn't be able to get through...........

Of course, it could have been on her tongue and transferred to the earbud if she licked it before cleaning her ears.....
Always reminds me of the time I ate a bowl of green buttercream icing..
(it came out the same way)

Maybe she was sharing the sweets with someone who later nibbled her ear and accidently dribbled?

Yes. Now just to clarify I do NOT lick it after using it. I lick it, use it once, and then discard it. The reason I lick is to soften it because I think they can be a bit harsh on the ear otherwise, and not very effective at cleaning. Kind of like using a dry cloth to wipe the kitchen surfaces.
Am I an awful person?

You do know that the human mouth is one of the most unhygenic parts of the body don't you?
If you need to moisten the buds, use cold tap water.
Reminds me though, been thinking about getting on of those home ear syringe kits.
my doctor told me never stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear
