Personally I feel this is taking the responsibility away from parents.
The money being spent on this bill could have been used to increase parents' awareness of what they can do to restrict access and how they should supervise young children.
Actually, to help put the emphasis on parental responsibility again, they could introduce fines on parents who don't take steps to protect their children.

Course they don't mention things like newsgroups where you can get some really hardcore stuff (so I'm told)

It's great when politicians mistake the web for the internet

Although it might give some parents a kick up the backside and get them to take responsibility for their children

IMHO real parents don't let their kids on the internet without some form of protection.

It may be as simple as 'net nanny' type software or even sitting with the child whilst they are on-line for the first few hours showing them the "do's and don'ts" like do use instant messenger to contact known friends, but don't meet new ones in person.

In my house, the kids PC is blocked from chatrooms, IRC etc. and the kids all know if they are caught in a chatroom / giving out personal data they don't go back on the computer at all.
I also cache every site they go to and flick through the URL's once in a while.

exactly - I'm signed up with two "free" newsgroup providers, one based in the US required credit card authentication of my age, the other based in Europe, didn't. The article, if I read it right, was about the potential repeal of of the requirement for the credit card check in the US, as it is unconstitutional?

Some of the stuff "available" on news servers is really disgusting - I don't like it, let alone how it would affect a child. That isn't a vote for censorship, just we all have to be aware it is "out there".:shrug:

Your comment regarding politicians & the web was spot on - no-one has even mentioned p2p or irc - b****r someone has.;)

The country that has a right to bear arms, I also assume you then have the right to die by arms.
The country that is one of the most oppressive in the west, yet preaches freedom to every other nation.

The US is somewhat of an enigma that on the one hand the place is full of evangalists spouting psuedo religious cr*p 24/7 and anyone who is anyone purports to be devoutly religious and the other they sell pron and perversion like it's going out of fashion !!

To my mind the place has no real moral foundation !

But on the question of pron on the net....I have two young daughters whom I am paranoid about protecting. I believe all forms of pron should be like smoking - banned from public areas and made as expensive as possible to dissuade access to it !!!

Unfortunately the boundaries of what is acceptable are being pushed further into the mire every day. You only have to watch programs like the ones about Holiday reps and that Villa thing or read The Star / NOTW etc to see what I mean (10 pages of tits'n bums & 5 of football !!).

Sorry to sound prudish :blah: , sex is OK (actually more than OK !!) but most of this stuff is sensationalism and exploitative !
