View Full Version : Crazy download speeds - someone explain?
Hi,
I've been downloading an SQL backup file of a website's PHPBB forum.

Even on the 1024k connection it was unfeasibly fast - obviously not right.
Now I'm on the 2MB connection and it's at this crazy speed.
This download speed went 'right' for a while and took 1min. 57 secs.
Now again, the speed is as the above pic says.
I'm getting 31MB down in around 20 seconds?!
Anyone explain why?
The file is legit - it's a bonafide 'big' file. I do not have the database stored locally, I'm going straight to a server.
Previously, my mate on the same connection as me would be getting the slow speed download, now he too is getting a crazy fast speed.
He's on baguley 5, I'm on 6 at the mo.

The type of file can make a difference to file transfer also as far as I know. SQL files are actually nothing more than a text file with a different file extension when it comes down to it.
I know when I have downloaded bitmaps and large text files in the past, it has gone at ridiculous speeds, but the speed you have recorded there is a lot faster than what I was getting!!

Yep - know what you mean mate. I've downloaded silly file sizes myself.
Yes, SQL files are just a load of text.
I'm under no illusions that I'm getting quicker speeds than I should be by the way, I'm just loooking for what must be a more logical explanation!

Right, the reason that the faster speeds appeared were pretty much that uBR had a bit of a flibble and your profile code was changed slightly to provide you an uncapped profile.
That's about it really, sorry dude but it's only temporary, and those thinking 'ooo yummy' and considering dodginess, it's so easy to spot it's not even funny :D

Sorry, this thread is so badly hijacked I can barely tell who is talking to who about what.
If someone is trying to suggest I had a freak speed occurrence, i can provide screen grabs every 2 minutes for the next 24 hours?

Could I get an un capped profile as much as once every few minutes perhaps? and how?

Well, it's only for that download - I don't get it on any other download.

KN4995 is it only when you download that kinda file or is it the same when you say download something from www.download.com (http://www.download.com) that you get the 1.38MB/sec download speed?????
if so then you might've been bumped up to a lovely 10meg line :O if thats the case then I think that your a jammy git :P

No, the file isn't already on my system, though I see where you're coming from.
Unfortunately, I can't give you access to the PHPBB or the server.
The server belongs to Universal records. I'd get me ar$e kicked!

Along those lines though, as I have mentioned before, my fellow administrator (on NTL 2MB and Baguley) gets the same speeds, so it's not *just* me.

I'm just naturally very, very curious.
Regardless of the fact that all is well, it really doesn't follow that I can just ignore an obvious phenomenon such as this!
I am posting also on the PHPBB forum with the same screen grabs. Noone there has an answer either, sadly.

what I find strange just looking at that screenie is the size of the rar you made.... you either used a massive compression to shave off nearly 30megs worth of data, or the filesize is corrupt as SQL.
thats what I'm thinking now.
I also saw that you open it via notepad....say you save it as a word doc how big is the file then

Saved as rtf it is 34mb.
In my experience, compressing sql files DOES create such a massive compression as this.
The actual 'compressing' takes some time, suggesting the file is really that large. Opening in notepad or Wordpad is very time consuming.
Again, I reiterate my friend is experiencing the same crazy speed and he is considerably more experienced in server admin and maintenance. He's as baffled as I am.

Worth mentioning that if I don't go through the Baguley proxy and use the manc one as is my default, the download speed is correct.
This screen grab was taken some time ago however, so you may notice the difference in file size - just posted to show that there is some deviance here, and I can get correct speeds and the file is legit size-wise.

A lost cause then it seems. My simple download speed shenanigans baffles the PHPBB and NTL experts alike.

Looks to me not legit speeds, he hasnt posted downloads from download.com or other sites, I woud love to see a screenshot of a ftp client downloading.

File downloaded is an .swf file, for as far as I'm aware you cannot FTP into a PHP DB.

If you're suggesting I'm trying to pull a blag by bragging I've uncapped speed or something, you're way off the mark. You should perhaps read all the thread? I'm trying to establish why my speed is ridiculously quick when downloading only ONE type of file from ONE point source whilst connected through the Baguley proxy.. And professing nothing but that mate.

I'm getting faster intermitent speed increases too here in E.London
I looked on the other thread about the new Armbit firmware and so decided to reset the cable modem. Got the firmware with the ntl logo on. Since then I've been getting HUGE spike increases when downloading from Usenet.
I have a 3MB connection and when downloading from Usenet, I won't say what:), the speed regularly "spikes" much higher than the usual 300kbs speed I normally get. Dozends of times in the last hour my speed has spiked, for a few seconds only, up to speeds ranging from 500kbs to about 850kbs. Although each spike is only brief it keeps happening and going up to these higher speeds.
I don't know what's going on, but I ain't complaining.... Getting my downloads about 10-15% quicker now.
Maybe NTL are testing the turbo button out on you.

I download an SQL back up once a day.
I get freakish speeds when I do.
I don't get freakish speeds anywhere else and don't pretend to want them.
I'm just curious why.

I came here with a request for someone to help explain what the score was in the hope someone might have more of an idea than I have, not to be given the up and down off someone so obviously narked about something as yourself. Everyone in this thread including myself has managed to keep it nice and friendly. I'm not sure what your problem is, and I'm not interested.

Someone else suggested that, and that maybe I've inadvertently found a way through! Nice as it would be, I'd expect a bit more across the boards though, rather than from just one source.
I think I'll leave it there to be honest. Not much coming out of this right now and I'm starting to get a bad vibe. Guess I'll put it down to 'one of those things', eh?

Shoulda mentioned I'm STB I suppose. And to clarify, this isn't an intermittent spike. This I can get anytime of day or night and is consistently.. Umm... consistent. ;)

As Mick said, you can do it through the advanced posting screen as an attachment. If you get the image the right size, you can just put before the http bit and after the .jpeg bit and it will show as a pic. Just don't make it too big!

KN - Did you get the other one, I sent two? While I was doing all this I was getting spikes of 700kbs and one went over 10mb. The time it takes me to capture them, the rest of you will be old and grey like me:)
