Hey guys,

Your opinion please.

I have a friends wedding to go to.

Now normally, the weddings I got to, would involve me getting the kilt hired for me, as I have been an usher at every wedding I have been to (not many).

But I have my own Kilt, (modern hunting Stewart).
I also have the brogues, socks, flashes/garters, belt, sporran, sgian dubh, kilt pin.

But I have a ghillie shirt, but I am going to need a formal shirt.

I want to wear a scrunchie tie with the kilt, so I would need a high button waistcoat.

now my question is, which jacket to hire that would go with the high button waistcoat/scrunchie tie?
Argyll or Prince Charlie?

your opinions are very much appreciated and in need of some urgency, as I was going to the reception, but now been invited to the full thing in less than 2 weeks time.

Ikthius, have you got any pictures of these ensembles that we could look at to reach a conclusion? I've tried Googling for them but I'm none the wiser!

try Google Images, Chim, - and afaik a 'scrunchie' tie, is a cravat.

Ik - I would go with the Argyll, most of the pics I've seen of the Prince Charlie are with a bow tie????

Thanks Homer!
I've found some and I agree with you - the Prince Charlie has too many buttons on it for my liking, I much prefer the Argyll style.
so it's Argyll 2, Prince Charlie 0 so far! :D
And enjoy your self at the wedding, Ik - we want pictures in your full wedding outfit too!

Personally I'd go for the Argyll.

Well, i would personally ask the personnel in the Kilt shop for their opinion, but although i always wear the Charlie, i also always wear a bow tie.

I would say that the Argyll in this case looks better, but better check your not breaking some unknown rule as theres always some smart ass who will point it out.

Ohh I have to say I do like the Prince Charlie one :tu:

As has been said I would ask in the shop for advice :)

the prince charlie is a nicer jacket that the argyll, but I know what you are talking about.

I have attached a couple of images, but maybe not best quality, the prince charlie has more buttons, and is more formal/better looking.

BR: that is absolutely true, there is always some smart a*se that knows best, but then again, they may complain about how I tied my laces of my brogues.

you will get a big green pip, after I have spread it a bit.

I prefer the Prince Charlie look but then again the times I have worn a kilt that is the style I have gone for as I prefer that look

to be honest I do not like the bow tie, so I am wanting to go for the scrunchie tie.

I do prefer the prince charlie jacket though

EDIT:
Ok, I know I asked this because of the tie issue, but now I would like your honest opinion of which jacket regardless of tie.

tbh, Ik, irrespective of the tie, I don't think the Prince Charlie suits a high button waistcoat, myself - but I can only claim a Sister who lives in Scotland, so feel free to ignore me ;)

(which goes best with the ginger wig/tam o'shanter combo, has to be borne in mind, too :jk: )

my niece was married in Ellon, she had a motorcycle escort of blokes in kilts & 'archie' wigs - it was quite a sight ;)

You go with the Argyle Jacket, usually the fancy one (Prince Charlie) is worn by the groom and best man etc.

Thats what I have always been led to believe anyway!

well, the groom is in the army, so he is wearing his uniform.

anyway, I have more pics, and I think I have found a solution.

2 pics of traditional prince charlie, and one prince charlie with a higher waistcoat, any difference?

You don't think there is too many buttons?

My mum likes the one on the left, but my dad thinks there is too many buttons because of the waistcoat.

I like the one on the left.

Cool, I think I will, I just needed more opinions than them, but I think I will, some places recommend the normal prince charlie and the scrunchie tie, which looks ok, but not as good.

I think the left one looks better as well, but I haven't a clue what the correct thing is.

Regardless, I would recommend taking the kit you have when you go for a fitting and see which looks best. (preferably bring someone (ususally a woman) along to help you judge what looks best.

As you are wearing a waistcoat and a scrunchie tie it has to be the Argyle :tu: The Charlie is better for a bow tie and no waistcoat.

The Prince Charlie with the Higher waistcoat looks good - thats my choice.

Chris

I've added a poll to help you keep score. :D

And I think you have to go for the Argyll, the Prince Charlie doesn't work with a high waistcoat.

Slightly similar subject - this is the last time I wore Highland dress to a wedding. The outfit is called 'The John Brown' - I own the kilt, belt, sporran and tie, and hired the rest.

Why thank you  Though I am three years older now, that bump on Mrs T is our wee boy, not this summer's new arrival.

My pic in the member's picture gallery thread was from later the same day.

Ik - it's well worth considering buying a Jacobite shirt (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/attachment.php?attachmentid=3685) to change into for the evening, if there's going to be a ceilidh. Much more suitable for dancing!

Yep - just pitch a few tents in your garden and give us the date - we'll be there! I'll even wear a kilt!

Personally I'd go for the Argyll.
I find the thought of the Black Stockings and Garter Flashes in the Dark Island Kilt Outfit rather unnerving; and I'm not sure if any tartan could be described as "exciting". :)

I have one chris, I posted that I have a ghillie shirt, which is the same thing.

I am going to ALD in clydebank later on today after a vistit to the doctor, not for me, to see if they do hire it, how much and what they think.

An update:

I went to http://www.macgregorandmacduff.co.uk/
in Dumbarton Road, Yoker ferry.

I spoke to a lovely girl, who helped me out. I said I was looking for the PC jacket a 5 button waistcoat and the scrunchie tie, and she said no probs, then I asked her opinion and she siad it is nicer to look at than the Argyll, I agreed.

So I got measured up, and chose the red tie. The green one just looked a bit dull looking, and she said the red is a better option as it brightens up the person wearing it.

The waistcoat is a special 5 button one, they have to hire it in for the PC jacket.

Although I have to buy the shirt, as most places say it is unhygenic to hire them out.

All in £30 to hire the pieces & £20 for the shirt, I pick it up on the thursday 1st Sep.

so I went for this ensemble (spelling).

Well not much space in the sporran for a camera, but no doubt there will be someone there with a camera, I know the grooms father likes to take pics, and he likes to give them back to the people he took the pics of.

I will see if my friend is taking a camera, the friend I am going to the wedding with.

A good time had by all, we thought it was not going to happen, the groom took so long to repeat, "to be my wife", but he came through in the end.

the day was good, the champagne glasses were never empty, I honestly just had one champagne, one glass but constantly topped up.

Ok, there is no gallery, and there is 42 pics, I tested and it works, any probs refresh your browser.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.kelly627/WeddingPhotos/weddingPics.html

there is no captions, just the pics, have fun with them.

EDIT: you may even have to click on one of the buttons to get it started, don't know why, the first image does not display straight away on the net, but it works fine offline before I uploaded.

What's the picture over the mantlepiece?

Soz for the ressurection of such an old thread but this could affect all those that are inclined to wear the Kilt it seems that the sporran wearers will need a licience to do so in the future Linky (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6234290.stm) :bigcry:

As an aside yes the Argyle is about right for guests at a wedding although the groom should wear the Prince Charles outfit although personally i prefer a more casual look
See my piccy should be somwhere on the forums to get an idea of the sort of thing i mean.

No need to be sorry but also no need to resurrect an old thread as there is a shiny new one just started today for the very subject.
