Our local street green cabinet was wide open a couple of days ago, so I decided to be nice and let VM know.

A check on their website gave a hotline number (03303330444), so I called and let them know.

Today I see that I have been charged for that call. Never again VM, never again.

A call to an 03 number should attract your service provider's normal geographic charge (or be free if you have inclusive geographic minutes).

I would have thought that they would have set their Helpline as free as it only benefits them?

Businesses have been profiteering from their 'help' lines for years ... it could have been worse, it could have been an 0844 or an 0871 which costs you more, and they are not normally bundled with your call allowance either. And the provider makes a profit out of you.

Used to be an 0870 number, so it is an improvement. Open cabs can also be reported via the "Contact us" link on VM's website.

Did you expect the call to be free? If so why?

I report any local cabinets I see left open on the basis that it makes serious vandalism and loss of services for residents less likely. I see it as a community service not a favour to VM and it's worth the cost of the call.

They don't charge you.

Your phone company charges you, just like they do for making any ordinary calls.

My phone company is Virgin.

I just gave them a call and the call was refunded, and they will look into why the chargeable number is on the myvirginmedia website instead of the free option of a call to 150.

And whilst I was on the call, I was given a reduction in cost of my package from £64.74 to £61.99 (about 4.5% off for 60Mb BB, TVXL and phoneM)

instead of the free option of a call to 150.Most customers have a talk plan where a call to an 03 number is free at some point during the week

Also, the direct number is a lot quicker than having to go through all the menu options, and VM can't add everything to 150, it would take forever to read them all out.

BenMcr,

Perhaps if VM gave a email to report a cabinet open would be a good idea.

The green VM cabinet opposite my house is regally open, perhaps they could give me a key to save them sending some one out to close the cabinet. :)
