Seasons finally over and I'm expecting a big window, the last few have ended up as damp squibs but given our top clubs poor champions league performance, three out of four having new managers and a bumper TV deal I can see big things happening.

My own teams publicly going for two out of three strikers, Carroll, lukaku or boney which will be potent, can't wait.

'& summer window' :erm: thanks for directing us

100million avialable to Wenger if he wants it.

Monaco are moving early. Barca have done Neymar. Real will want to get Bale done.

Lukaku will surely be a loan deal if it happens but Chelsea might want to keep him this season, especially if they sell Torres.

It doesn't look like they will keep hold of Lukaku. Schurrle is joining Chelsea. They already have Ba. And theres noises of them going big for another striker, Cavani may be?

Originally it was a loan with option to buy but as time drags even a loan deal might prove tricky.

Pleasure, in some ways I prefer the summer window to the actual season, well when there's.a world cup on perhaps.

I'll be watching what Stevenage do over the summer, hopefully they can strengthen their squad to push on for promotion. As long as they don't do what they did last season, start great then fail later in the season and end up nearly in the relegation scrap.

Basel’s Cabral lined up for Sunderland move

SUNDERLAND are believed to have clinched the signing of Swiss midfielder Cabral.

Reports coming out of Switzerland suggest the 24-year-old – who has been a key figure for leading Swiss Super League side Basel in recent seasons – has agreed a four-year deal with the Black Cats.

Cabral, full name Adilson Tavares Varela, joined Basel from Lausanne in 2007 but has allowed his contract to run down and is now available on a Bosman free transfer.

Should the deal be confirmed, the defensive midfielder will become Sunderland’s second signing of the close season with Altrincham’s teenage striker Duncan Whatmore having agreed a move to the Stadium of Light last week.

Cabral was born in the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of West Africa but took up an option to play his international football for Switzerland and has been capped at Swiss U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

He is the cousin of ex-Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes.

Sunderland are staying tight-lipped over Cabral but have confirmed to the Echo that so far he is yet to officially join the club.

That does not mean, though, that Cabral might not have signed a pre-contract agreement with Sunderland.

His contract with Basel does not expire until the end of June, which means he can not sign before July 1 anyway. But he can agree a pre-contract, which to all intents and purposes makes him a Sunderland player-in-waiting.

Should Cabral’s move go ahead, it will be another sign of the road manager Paolo Di Canio and owner Ellis Short plan to take Sunderland down now.

Both Cabral, and French defender Valentin Roberge who plays for Portuguese side Maritimo and is also available on a Bosman, appear to be deals which are all but done behind the scenes.

And when added to the acquisition of Whatmore, it is clear that part of Sunderland’s new strategy is to recruit and develop promising young players.

Di Canio wants to add athleticism and pace to the squad, with younger and less injury-prone players.

Short clearly wants his money spent shrewdly – though, of course, it does not rule out bigger transfer fees for other players this summer.

It certainly suggest that Sunderland want to hoover up some of the best Bosmans around and young prospects at bargain prices – before turning their attention to adding one or two more substantial names.

Short does not want to spend big this summer and is looking at a restructuring aimed at getting the best possible value for money.

But he will also appreciate that Martin O’Neill was correct when he said his squad was “short of genuine quality” – and the American will know that it will be a struggle to tackle that issue on the cheap.

Rumours are that Liverpool will need to sell in order to buy during this window. We'll see how that holds up. The owners seem to have underestimated the cost of getting them back challenging for the Champions League so they'll need to put more in, so much money wasted on mediocre British 'talent'.

In other news Laudrup has said he might need to sell Ashley Williams who has been linked to the aforementioned Liverpool as well as Arsenal.

Not if be turns them down tho.

Rooney to arsenal is crap too.

This so called £100m "kitty" is nonsense. It does not mean they can't spend £100m. As it is cash reserves not income. It also means wages need to be factored in. Effectively Rooney on a 5-year deal and £25m say fee would cost £65m.

You'd only be able to sign a £20m player with the rest.

wtf are you talking about. theres over 100m in cash reserves + add in the upcoming revenue hikes. our wage budget has increased more than people expected, no one seems to be talking about that. 'effectively' taking 2-3 deadwood useless not used players off the payroll can fund Rooney.

If Cesc is unhappy at Barca then theres a few things to bare in mind. IF Thiago leaves on the cut-fee clause kicking in then I doubt very much that Barcelona will willingly allow Cesc leave. I doubt Utd will be bidding BIG for him so that leaves one of the oil rich to trigger the release clause or Arsenal of course triggering the buy back clause.

Arsenals "£100m" though doesn't stretch far at all as I said.
Their wage bill is actually high for the average players they have. They cannot afford to splash out on more than 1 big player. So wringer chooses to buy lots of lesser ones instead. That's why they were unable to offer van persie finances to stay.

100m isn't much if you start throwing it about. 100m is actually a decent budget, I have issues with the media reported 70m kitty tbh. Arsenals wage bill is extremely high for the quality on the books, everyone knows that but a lot of that deadwood is going to taken off the payroll. some are leaving with contracts running out and the rest hopefully transferred out. also the wage budget can be increased this summer.

Really? What about falcao stories...going to all and sundry.

Football stories are less back by fact and more pure speculation.

If you sat and looked at all the stories, you would find most are made up.

There was an article written by an english paper (speculation about whomever, I forget), that was picked up by the spanish papers quoting english newspaper, which was then picked up again by the english papers quoting spanish news sources.

However, Fabregas will not leave Barca and the bookies odds are coming down to entice idiots to waste their money. Easy money.

It's not every player tho is it?

I know of a certain defender for a Championship club who was in talks with a Premier League side last season. He was told he was going to be bought, and at last minute they got someone else instead.

This summer, he is negotiating with a different Premier League club. That Premier League club already have an international in his position but he is heavily linked (in the press) with another Premier League Club.

These negotiations go on where people agree to sign but nothings done because another move in a long chain might not go through.

For example, this Championship club will probably be negotiating a deal for a replacement, and that club and the next club...

Damien
31-05-2013, 16:57
I agree with Colin. Newspapers need to fill up space and they use transfer stories to do it. If one player is rumoured to be moving then expect them to be linked to every club that is rumoured to need a striker. So few of these rumours turn out to be anything at all. Remember when we were rumoured to be 99% done on M'Vila, then 'complications' occurred, then Arsenal fans got mad at Wenger, someone spread a rumour Wenger 'dithered', then that we wouldn't match the cost, then that Spurs had hijacked the bid and so on until we were wondering if it would be sealed on deadline day.

In the end Arsenal hadn't even made an approach that summer. An entire 'transfer saga' fabricated from almost nothing - just that the player wanted to leave Rennes.

Also 'burden of evidence'? Newspapers don't have to reveal their dubious sources so when a newspaper 'understands' that a club is 'interested' you have a nonsense of a story. A story that could be written by anyone about anything without being called upon. They could easily then have 'misunderstood' and 'interested' doesn't commit anyone to anything.

As for them sometimes being right? Well they're more often wrong than right and it doesn't take a genius to link players to positions at other clubs. Arsenal need a striker, Rooney wants to leave United, easy story. Damien understands that Arsenal are interested in Rooney.

Honestly let's come up with a set of rumours and see if we score better or worse than the press.

The only time to have some interest in a rumour is if it contains specific information or quotes that they can then be called out on. I.E 'The player met the manager' or '£70,000 a week for five years'.

I don't think its a pipe dream, it might be complicated to complete but nthings impossible. others will say anything to beat Arsenal down yet we just keep responding :D

Most teams don't win trophies and most teams don't make the Champions League. It's not a massive success but hardly a failure either. As for responding it's probably in relation to the fact that people were slagging Arsenal off all season and effectively writing off Champions League, as they did last year, as Arsenal managed to qualify in the end.

The only people that dismiss the Champions League are those who either qualify all the time or are never in the picture for it. Look how much Spurs celebrated when they got in and how disappointed there were when they missed. How much would Liverpool love to be back in it? No Arsenal fan is satisfied with CL only but considering our decline and all, the situation the club found itself in because of stupid choices theres no doubt the club getting into the CL year in year out is something of an achievement.

Its more to do with what Arsenal were achieving not so long ago, consistently winning trophies, league titles, going a season unbeaten. Now getting 4th is a massive achievement. As i said before, for teams like Spurs its different, they are progressing so Champions league is a big achievement, Arsenal are going backwards.

Absolutely. Time to spend some money!

Will Levy allow all the funds from the Bale sale to be used on new players? I don't think so. He want a new stadium.

Its about finding the stories that hold weight. Your list which you posted of players going here or there has been posted by me already, not in list form but over the past few months they have all been reported heavily/by worthy people/papers.

Sorry didn't read back pages and pages. That list is pretty nailed on isn't it?

Interesting about Levy. He'll try and drag it out as long as possible meaning any potential targets will prob get impatient and move on. They definitely need a striker though. I wouldn't want to rely on Adebayor!

I just don't think Arsenal will spend any money. Or not enough, they'll go for Podolski types and Giroud, when they should go for real quality. A lot of talk of Jovetic, I don't know how good he is.

I don't buy the people who claim Wenger is on some crusade to build a team from a £0 net spend. It's the club not having or willing to use funds.

I don't see why Arsenal not spending money and whether Wenger gets a new contract being linked?

Arsenal can afford to increase their expenditure by £45 if they keep income other than TV deal the same. (*EDIT: And Profit's would be 0/break-even)

That equates to 2 £30m players on £200k a week and 1 £25m player on £150k a week. All on 5-year deals.

Who do you want?

It should be said Arsenal aren't very open about their finances and what there is for transfers. It's only what people infer from the accounts but we don't know how much is actually allowed to be spent, certainly wouldn't be all of it.

We'll see. £70 million seems about right...

its linked becasue fans are peed off and there will be a crapstorm if Wenegrs given a new contract while spending little towards progression. you just have to look at TheSun printing a made up story that got everyone annoyed, even Wenger himself. the pressure is there, its clear to see.

There will be more movement in revenue than just TV, 1 example being the early Emirates renewal payment kicking in.

Of course only those inside the 'circle' if you like only know how much and so on and of course everything in the bank wont be allowed to be spent but to say 70 m only, thats pathetic. half of whats in the bank. its not even a sensible move at this point considering the hike in revenue thats coming.

Wrong. The board are under growing pressure. The Arsenal Supporters Trust have called in third party to get reports done looking into the boardroom at Arsenal. That is such a significant step thats been taken by a group that feared being kicked out or ousted of communication, they said sod all a couple of years ago. added to that the more vocal leaders of the group calling for answers to key questions.

A lot of fans back Wenger, myself included but this current regime needs changing. he needs to spend, all fans agree on that. if theres no spend and the decline continues then fans, myself included want change. Arsenal has a 150m wage bill to date. Utds wage bill isnt much bigger than Arsenals and look whats happening there. Arsenal have missed David Dein big time. we haven't won anything since Dein left. Dein + Wenger = Success. Gill + Fergie = Success. all of this has been spoken of already countless times on here. read the previous footy thread. its just not right to just blame 1 aspect, theres a lot at fault if you look deep into it. bottom line though is Arsenal has money to spend and I'm confident it will be spent. we'll have to wait and see whos right.. bring on the transfer rumours :D or every pipe dream ;)

You've had players like Arshavin on the books down the years who hardly played. Didn't he cost like £8m too?

Rosicky, is he worth it if he only plays at end of season?

Gervinho does ok sometimes but not really good enough and doesn't play much either.

Is it time to give up on diaby?

And I never understood why they signed that full back, from Malaga, forgot his, ah... Monreal, when you have gibbs, ok he was injured, but why commit? why not get a stop gap?

I agree arsenal need to spend. I loved watching Ljungberg, Pires, Vieira and Henry.

Vieira by the way, being touted as future City manager. Great guy. Loads of Arsenal fans hate him not being at Arsenal.

You could not make it up (oh, if it is a football story, of course you can make it up, boom boom :D)

Yes really, falcao staying put then is he? There are so many people claiming to be players representatives demanding a slice of the action that have press contacts for a simple example, they put stories out, so do clubs wanting rid of someone, I doubt very much they even have to consider making stuff up.

I was guessing with Arshavin, even worse then. Broke golden rule: never sign a player off back of a good tournament if shown nothing before.

I know they had to get someone in instead of santos (why sign him in that strange rush of signings at end of summer window 2011) but did they need him on permanent deal?

I meant they hate him being at City not him. He's a legend at Arsenal. And also did well in 18 months at City too, helping us in the FA Cup win as he played most of the games in that run.

I thought that it's probably more simple in that he was probably either not offered a position at arsenal or offered a more prominent role at City / better wage packet.

He was given a "football development executive" or something like that, but basically he was just doing a bit of everything, some coaching with kids, some community work across the world, and some proper "executive" work.

Not overly concerned, as long as they improve the style of play.

Football to me is supposed to be entertainment. Winning, is a by-product.

Craig Bellamy says Moeys is too aggressive. What I read into that was that Moyes refused to roll over and accept Bellamy's demands to transfer to Everton. Moyes won't suffer fools at United, he'll make the tough necessary decisions like Fergie did. And if that means selling Shrek then so be it. But Arsenal for the love of God don't sign him. Let Chelski sign him instead to replace Torres.

Lyon's President is renowned for longing things out then screwing himself so this one will drag out. Lyon cannot offer him high wages.

It comes from a lot of ITK's at Utd. David Gill wanted Mourinho but the rest of the board were against it because of the instability so went with Moyes, also because Gill didn't really have a say in it anyway. Fergie led Mourinho to believe that he was the front runner when they last met but it turns out he recommended both Mourinho and Moyes to the board, who obviously went for Moyes because of the issues with Mourinho. Theres rumours that Mourinhos representatives contacted Utd when Fergie announced his retirement and that Utd told them they weren't interested. I don't know how true that is but the rest is correct.

I don't think so, the majority of the board wanted Moyes, there were a few who wanted Mourinho and Gill was one of them. Obviously if he was staying he would have pushed harder and listened to more but i think it would have still been Moyes. It wasn't a unanimous decision like the club said.

It was quite clear to see that Mourinho had his heart set on the Utd job, he wouldn't have made that so apparent if he didn't have something to go on. Watch this season, it won't be all lovey lovey between Mourinho and United/Fergie like it was in the past and its not because Fergie has retired.
