My power levels seem to be changing a lot. would this cause the break up on HD TV channels and the odd disconnect I've been expriencing?

I'll post my changing power levels in here:

your SNR is getting quite low, so there could be noise coming from somewhere

Sephiroth
16-04-2012, 20:17
This is likely to be a dodgy street box amplifier (evidenced by the varyying power levels).

There could, of course, be a poor connection somewhere that is just about making. So make sure your coax cables are tight at each end. It could also be a dying SH but this is unlikely. It's the first thing a field engineer will change, usually.

Otherwise it's a network team job (not an ordinary field engineer)

So far I've had 4 techs here to sort the problem. 2 ordinary techs, a senior tech, then my head of area tech. but it's still happening. They've changed taps at the cab, checked levels etc.

Last visit was from my head area tech geezer in his 60's. In the box outside on my wall he changed the active splitter and all the connections on the wires. But the same thing is still happening, break up on the HD channels and the odd disconnection with wired and wireless internet connections.

When everything else is OK, and especially when levels are changing, it leads back to the street cabinet amplifier. IMO.

borrissey
16-04-2012, 20:47
Yeah I guess they try the cheaper options first to see if that sorts it...

Has your neighbours mention anything? Are there have the same problem? Mention "CARDY" to the local techs. Its a tool where they can look at surrounding equipment after that identified the cab you are on assuming all areas have the same software. They can distinguish what is causing the problem e.g. the amp or if its your drop cable , etc.

how are the power levels in the morning???are more stable??

if they change in the morning it could be from the cabinet or if they steady other off peak times it could be due to traffic which cost more noise ratio

If this is a block of flats, try to find the incoming splitter and see what you can see. Are you a long way from the street cabinet?

Different QAMs is that normal?

good point dude, I didnt notice that. I dont think it would make that much difference. You would see a difference in speed but I dont know what sort of throughput tv needs. I suppose if it works, then it works. You cant watch tv any faster than real time :)

My Tivo has different QAMs; I think the video is 64QAM and the Broadband 256QAM.

But the Tivo Return Power at 58 dBmv confirms what the modem stats are showing; there is attenuation on the line. This could be due to the street cabinet as I indicated earlier or if this is a block of flats, poor distribution (splitting).

That data is very good for 400m from the street cabinet. The downstream SNR is excellent (and that really matters). The upstream power (if stable) is consistent with the distance from cabinet.

The small variances are likely to be temperature related.

Is performance OK?

Is the Tivo return power now similar to the modem?

The TiVo box upstairs is the same as the SuperHub 49. They are both upstairs and run of the same splitter in the attic. I've got TiVo downstairs and V HD box. Then upstairs I've got TiVo and SuperHub.

TiVo downstairs is currently 44 and V HD box is 41.

Yeah they would be good levels if they stayed the same, stable.

Nope getting break up on HD channels and the odd disconnect of internet with wired and wireless connections.

So that's got to be electrical misbehaviour at the street cabinet amplifier if it's affaceting your neighbour too.

That should be routine for VM to sort out. LOL.

They are replacing the cable from the cabinet to your house, to see if that fixes your problem.

Took ages to get onto superHub was really slow, had to try a few times.

I'll post them in an hours time also.

I'm not a big fan of the re pull to my house though, they've left old wire there and just attached new one with cable ties to trunking, i'ts out in the open not behind the trunking. Then on my outside wall they've just put the new trunking next to old trunking and left old there.

Not when I posted my request, LOL.

Anyway, ahead of your next levels post: If the DS levels remain steady then the problem lies in the upstream. Are there T3 events in the event log?

If they've removed common cause attenuation (i.e. in both directions through the re-pull) then there could be an imparment in the SH (unlikely); an impairment at the street cabinet or further up the network. Remember that the power level is demanded by the CMTS if it can't properly read the upstream data sent from your end.

i have almost same situation
levels from time to time goes -3 +3 up or down but for now pic & internet is ok (well at the moment)

did they repulled cable for you?
ask them if they can move your connection cable to upper slot in the cabinet
to me this small cabinet from the pic you have provided does not look powerfull

had my power levels +12 and the engineer when came he just moved more down my cable connection in the cabinet so now power level is lower and normal 0 to +2,5
