Cheers

D-Link-DIR-655 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-655-Wireless-Gigabit-Firewall/dp/B000PLSAII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334572632&sr=8-1)

You won't go far wrong with this router in my opinion. It's also a pretty decent price now, I paid around £90 for it a few years back.

if you think SH can not go more far why dont you ask them for a new one so will save you money...unless you want something more from a router

This is the second one we have had and still have the same problems with the wireless and that. It was only swapped a few weeks ago!

Another vote for the Linksys E4200 v1. All my problems with the lack of range and regular (daily) disconnects were resolved following installation of the Linksys and switching the SH to modem only mode.

It would appear the asus n66u can run tomatousb (http://www.shadowandy.net/2012/03/asus-rt-n66u-tomatousb-firmware-flashing-guide.htm)

I'm doing the same research at the moment.

I was going to go with either Asus RT-N56U, Apple Extreme or Linksys E4200 (With the Linky in the lead)

However, I am thinking I will wait and see what come out in the next few weeks.

I'm in the same position and think it's best to wait a bit longer too, as three potentially very good Dual-band routers have just come out (with one yet to be released in the UK), but they're a bit expensive at the moment (and their firmware is a bit immature). Hopefully they'll fall in price in a couple of months:

Asus RT-N66U (http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN66U/) (Already mentioned, but considering how well received the RT-N56U was, could be very good)
D-link DIR-827 HD Media Router 2000 (http://amplifi.dlink.com/products/DIR-827) (CNET: The D-Link DIR-827 is a very good true dual-band router that needs a firmware upgrade so it can live up to its potential.)
Linksys EA4500 (http://homestore.cisco.eu/store/ciscoeu/en_IE/pd/productID.247932600) (I think this is the replacement for the E4200, though don't know when it's coming to the UK. Very positive reviews on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-EA4500-App-Enabled-Dual-Band-Wireless-N/dp/B007IL7AKM)).

I had not seen the D-link but the other two are certainly at the top of my wait list.

That is excellent for wireless, What did you get with the Superhub? I rarly get above 50 on 2.4ghz and 75 on 5ghz. Annoyingly I have mostly 2.4ghz devices so I need to stick with that :-(

The speed test on my signature below was done through wireless using a Buffalo Airstation NFINITI WL-N 300MBPS with the superhub in modem mode on a 60 meg connection. Not so bad for a £25 router ;)

Hmm don't understand why people keep buying apple stuff when you just pay over the top to have an apple symbol on the kit as inside you can get the same for cheaper...Enjoy your airport sure it will at least be better than the superhub.

Better because the wireless work, better because it wont have to be reset 1 maybe twice a day yes, and better because it has an apple logo!

I like there products, the design, the software and the fact that everything just works!

Yeah they usually package their kit in a beautiful styled case..just that inside it is similar/same components just more expensive, but as far as just works so does my TP-Link and im sure some one ;) will say that about Linksys.

As I said im sure it will work fine for you and you will be very happy with your kit. Enjoy your more stable environment and better performing router!

Really? I find there is always quite a big difference between sites. Also doing speed test on the same site often gives different results because of load on site etc.

I have come to the conclusion that the Linksy is the one I want. The only problem is, with a new one on the way I am gonna have to wait and I just don't know how long. The EA4500 is the one I want, although I would be interested in seeing how the ASUS N66 rates when released.

you wont have to wait long, normally stuff like that is shipped next day delivery

The only information I can find on the EA4500 (http://www.tomshardware.com/news/cisco-linksys-EA-Series-Wireless-N-Smart-Router,15232.html) (apart from the product page) is that "The new EA Series will help usher in the Connected Home experience, as Cisco is currently working with Whirlpool and more than two dozen other companies, app developers and service providers who are pushing towards network-connected "smart" appliances."

And ""Users can give guests Internet access, set parental controls, and add devices to their network from anywhere at any time through Cisco Connect Cloud's easy-to-use password-protected site,""

The thing I'm not sure on is - minus the Apps & Cloud computing - whether it'll be any quicker then the Linksys E4200v2. Unfortunately no reviews yet. For a UK release date, Morecomputers have a 04 May restock date (http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=EA4500-UK) for it.

As far as the RT-N66U, Techradar seem to have the first UK review (http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/networking-and-wi-fi/modem-routers/asus-rt-n66u-dark-knight-1075721/review) and it's quite positive. The negative for the Asus is it's high price.

This might seem to be a daft question, but is there a way of improving the signal from this new Modem/Router that V/M have saddled us all with?

On our one, its so weak that we can hardly get a signal in the next room where the router is?

Before they changed it, we used to get full power all over the house, but not any more, in fact its rubbish:(

They're not released yet and not available anywhere and no definite dates for when stores will be stocking them.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will come along in a moment, but there's a few things you could try.

As mentioned a few times on this forum, you could try running inSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/) on one of your wireless PCs. This lets you see what wireless channels are being used near you and then you can switch the Superhub to a less congested one.

If your wireless devices support it, changing to the 5Ghz range could improve performance, especially if channel bonding is used too (I think the Superhub supports this). Virgin also have a handy guide (https://my.virginmedia.com/discover/broadband/your-broadband/connecting/how.html#position) to placing your Superhub.

If you had a wireless router before the Superhub, you could place the Superhub in modem mode (http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=412750&CURRENT_CMD=SEARCH&CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTY=us&VM_CUSTOMER_TYPE=Cable) and then use your previous router for Wireless and routing duties. This is what I'm doing at the moment. I'm currently using a Linksys router released in 2008, and this seems to be giving me faster wireless speeds then I can get with the Superhub.

Thanks a lot for that very helpful advice, much appreciated.

I will get our lad to follow all them instructions, as he is "on the ball" with computers, and has been for ages;)

Ive bookmarked the pages of the links you gave me, so that will save him some time, thanks again.

Ive moved the router, as suggested in that V/M advice page, but I'm still only getting 3 bars (out of 5) while I'm in this other room?

If all else fails, and you still can't get a good signal, best to put the Superhub in modem mode and then connect your previous router and use that for wireless (or buy a new router of your choice, if you don't have your old router anymore).

I also found this page (http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=437644&CURRENT_CMD=SEARCH&CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTY=us&VM_CUSTOMER_TYPE=Cable) on Virgin's site which goes into more detail about how to get a better wireless signal from your Superhub. Including this page linked off it (http://help.virginmedia.com/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=437642&CURRENT_CMD=SEARCH&CONFIGURATION=1002&PARTITION_ID=1&USERTYPE=1&LANGUAGE=en&COUNTY=us&VM_CUSTOMER_TYPE=Cable) which explains how to switch your Superhub to the 5GHz band.
