After phoning Virgin Media to ask for an upgrade from 10Mb to 30Mb I was convinced in to getting their new 60Mb plan with a loyalty discount as there was "no option to give me 30Mb". So, today was the day of the Super Hub install. Arrived on time and set it all up, after running some speed tests and getting speeds around 7Mb he said it would take 24 hours to "settle", I believe I am right in saying this is absolute rubbish, he then left.

Once the engineer left I had a look myself and realised it was still on my 10Mb configuration, therefore I decided to call Virgin, just as I started the call however I refreshed the super hub status and it had changed to the correct configuration so I left it that and started running speed tests etc.

Did a few wireless speed tests to find im getting speeds around 17Mb-22Mb on average, however it is constantly up and down, even when wired in via Ethernet. The highest speed I have had is 32Mb, but even had speeds as low as 5Mb-7mb.. Tried a number of different speed test servers and different tests including the BT one and one this site. (Seems to be worse this evening)

Had a look at the Super hub power levels etc, they seem fine to me... and tried doing the download test on large files to get a maximum download of 2.2MB/s. Whilst this is faster than my 10Mb, If I wanted 20Mb then I would have just waited for my speed upgrade and kept my old modem...

Seems to be a lot of complaints about this new 60Mb service on VM forums, will try a test later during non peak hours and try it in modem mode. Any suggestions or is this likely to be a utisation issue? On the plus side, upload speeds are excellent!

looks like congestion on the network, as your max traffic rate is set to the 60mb config

set up a thinkbroadband ping monitor, that should paint a nice picture of whats going on

If thats the case I wish they hadn't bothered selling the service to me, seems ridiculous that they continue to sell an oversubscriped service *sigh* :(

Just tried to create a ping monitor but apparently they are not adding more monitors to the beta.

yeah theres a guy in LE3 on the VM forums who had confirmed high utilisation and he was given the 60meg upgrade as well, needless to say he doesnt get the speeds. I think the utilisation may be checked but seems gets ignored.

VM are now advising people when they upgrade in certain area that they may suffer from poor speeds due high utilisation . I was upgraded yesterday to 60mb...and was told this over the phone.

I would also suggest trying several speedtests such as downloading Linux files, as on speedtest.net I can only max out at about 35mb but downloading from a UK file host I get the full 60mb...

I've seen them giving out the same warnings, but surely the network should be able to do more than the < 7mbps that the OP is getting.

Even worse today, maximum speed of 1.87! Was better off getting 9Mb on the old 10Mb service!

What speed do you get downloading this:

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/12/linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso

On speedtest.net I only get around 34mb, but downloading the above file, i'm getting full speed :)

Hi desi11,

Just downloaded it... stayed around 2.2MB/s for most of the download, the highest it got to was 2.5MB/s.

I feel I should add that you should not be doing any of these tests wirelessly. That just adds a whole load of other factors. Let's get your wired speeds sorted before dealing with wireless.

If you're getting 20meg speeds wired then there is a problem. If this is the case, call retentions and require that they charge you the 20meg price until this is solved.
