The Wireless signal is so poor

Im using the Superhub and find the WiFi signal very poor, i have a WRN2000 router and when on modem mode find that signal improves, but i want to maximise speeds once on 100mb (50Mb just now but upgrade imminent), will my WRN2000 be suffice for 100mb?

I can recommend the ASUS RT-N16 router. Nice piece of kit and easy to setup. Also takes 3rd party firmware. I have Tomato installed on mine.

i can also reccommend the rt-n16 - nice wireless speeds:

Another one for the Asus RT-N16. Stick tomato on it and you basically have an amazing peice of kit. I've just added a 2TB USB hdd to mine so its now a DLNA media/file server in addition to being a damned good router.

has any one tried the Fritz!box 7390 as router with virgin media's superhub?is also OK for infinity (2 in 1) when fttc comes in my area
http://www.avm.de/de/Service/FRITZ_Clips/start_clip.php?clip=fritz_clip_cable_modem_en

it can do both 2.4 & 5 mhz at the same time plus can handle the dect phones, voip and if you have iphone can call free world wide plus it can handle media server

EDIT

FB 7390 is a bit pricey .... will work good the cisco linksys E3000 ???
six antennas and media server as well and 2,4 & 5 mhz wireless together

you have hit the nail on the head dude, I am Linksys all the way. I have got the E3000 which is amazing. Ignitionnet who is god when it comes to networking has got the E4200 and he swears by it. The difference between the models is obviously the features and stuff but despite the fact that it hasnt got any external antennae, the wireless performance, dual bandness, range, signal strength etc etc are kick ass and I'll never have anything other than a Linksys router (I have been using them for years)

Hint...out of the box the installed asus firmware is crap so do yourself a favour and install tomatousb before you start using it.

ASUS RT-N56U I've been looking at this one as well not sure how good it will be it costs a little more than the N16 but it looks attractive

I was looking at that for possible future reference and have seen good reviews. Regards the internal antennae it "has a feature called Ai Radar that purports to focus its radio in the direction of connected clients, boosting both signal strength and range."

However there are reports on the ASUS forums that it has problems with some modems with diconnections from the Internet (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&id=20111108071638126&board_id=11&model=RT-N56U&page=8&count=79) (post 78 is from a Virgin Media user) and RT-N56U keeps losing lease (http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&id=20110704122515789&board_id=11&model=RT-N56U&page=1&count=19). Looks good if they can sort it.

ok so I have ordered 100mb so it looks like I should buy the Asus rt n16??

Seems to be the main selling point on here...what is the signal like for something upstairs? as router will be down stairs stepsons laptop and 360 are in his room so would like a good signal.

I actually meant to ask what the tomato software is and what does it have thats better than the supplied firmware of the router?

Out of the box firmware has DNS issues. Loads of sites won't open. To be honest it is unusable. IMO.

Tomato USB (http://tomatousb.org/start) has so many options you won't know what to configure first. Seems to produce a stronger wireless, faster throughput on lan transfers. To cut a long story short it's better at everything. Just install it to make the rt n16 awesome. :)

hi guys
new to virgin here so coming from previous adsl line and modems i would like to ask about the cisco e 3000 model or the asus e16

few dsl modems/routers will have in the statistics the electrical lenth of the line or will state how far from the dslam like the billion 7800

has the cisco or the asus 16 with tomato usb this info in their stats??
thanks

are you after an ADSL modem/router? i.e. virgin national, or are you on cable?

i am with cable and thinking get the cisco e 3000 or the asus but with the asus i have read the default firmware makes reboot the router by it self
i confuse
the asus got 3 thick solid external aerials so this this very good but the e 3000 has got 6 internal antennas and can not go wrong

i also am about the fritzbox 7390 can be use as router
http://www.avm.de/en/Produkte/FRITZBox/FRITZ_Box_Fon_WLAN_7390/index.php

the wireless reception is not the best from reviews but it can handle same time 2.4 & 5 Ghz together and all the phones in the house
also is a adsl and vdsl for fibre (2 in 1) if change in the future for fttc , it intergears iphones and android phone and can use them while in the home network to make international calls free..... but is too much money about 200 quid so i turn to the e 3000 or the asus 16

still undesired about these two

I've just had my VIP 50 package upgraded to 100mb (As it essentially the Collections package) and I have the VMNG300 modem.

When connected to my D-link DIR615, the max speed I am getting is around 94Mbps. When the modem is directly connected to the PC, I get easily over 100Mbps.

Virgin are sending me a Superhub, but I'm not planning on using it just yet, and even if I did, it'd be used in modem only mode.

My question is, I need a new router with Gigabit ports. I have found this: Link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002YETVTQ/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_g147_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1 OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=13WHR6DFTRCY6QR9DTEX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294)

Looking at the reviews, it looks pretty good for the money and the wireless looks decent as well. Is it any good? Does anyone else have one? Does anyone else have any recommendations?

Any info would be much appreciated.

I got that TP-LINK one from Amazon and have to say its working great. Signal strength is excellent through the house now whereas the superhub was struggling. You could load alternative firmwares on it, but for me the latest original firmware is fine.

I've looked at the tomato site says linux on it?

I've never used linux not too fussed if I want to install this on the router would be a simple plug and play to use or will I need knowledge of linux to use the router software?

I can't do with the hassle from the wife if she can't get connect to the net and I need a router with a great signal to reach the whole house from downstairs.

You don't need to know jack about linux.

In spite of seeming complex it is only a 10 minute job to install tomato usb (http://patricksheedy.net/blog/simple-tomato-firmware-install-on-asus-rt-n16-router/). In the remote chance of a failure their is a recovery procedure which also gives the possibility of reverting back to an asus firmware. Quite while you should want to though is beyond my comprehension.

they have an upgrade coming soon.

General Maximus
07-04-2012, 20:52
because at the end of the day everything revolves around $$$ and VM want a product which they can support 100%. I am sure there is a very good statistic showing that 80% of tech support calls are non-connection issue orientated and VM want to be able to support the routing side of things as well. They did a cheap ass job with the shub, didnt test it properly and rushed it through and there have been no end of problems with it which should have been picked up on prior to general release. They are working their way through them with numerous firmware upgrades but this has been going on for over a year and a half.

This is why you still see many posts on the forum about the shub and new users having wireless issues (unaware of the drama) and many of us being blunt and recommending putting it in modem mode and buying a proper router which you know is going to work out the box as it should do.

given the fiasco with the shub I think everyone has lost confidence in them now. Even if it is the best thning since sliced bread, from the shub experience, I would now expect it to be a pile of poo.

Either way, I am still not going to use it, nothing they supply is going to trump my Linksys router.

Just an update. The TP-Link came on Tuesday and had it set up with in 20 mins. Wireless is superb, I'm talking 100% signal strength on the PS3 upstairs and wireless has to go through two slightly thick walls.

The only problem I encountered was it dropping connection very 30 mins or so. It turned out I'd forgotten to select the wireless channel and it was conflicting with someone else's wireless round here. After I'd changed it to channel 1, voila, no more drop outs.

I've also updated it to the lastest firmware as the one in the router was quite old.

So yeah, a big thumbs up from me for £42.

We have just had our Internet upgraded from 10Mb to 60Mb with new Modem/Hub.

We get the full Mb speed on the desk top, but the best I can get on my lap-top and my wife's I-Pad is between 13 to 20Mb?

The V/M technician came and adjusted the new Modem/Hub and that made a difference, and it doesnt drop away to zero, like it used to.;)

Still, that's better than the 10Mb we had before.

All Ive got back are them auto replies saying that they will be in touch within 48 Hours.

Then the Emails I do get back from them, give no answers at all to the questions I had originally asked?:(

The crap router they installed is not our main problem, its the poor Internet connection coming into our hose. We are being charged for 60Mb yet receiving only around 15.

I have been using this router for the last 3 months and it is excellent. Well worth the money i paid when I got it. Full wifi coverage over all out house with no dropouts on any of the devices (2 xboxes, 1 ps3, 2 ipads, 2 iphones, 1 blackberry, 1 android). Works great as file & media server. Looks good.
