dropped connections | lag spikes | Packet loss

On 30MB broadband + superhub
Speed is generally good but recently the connection quality is very poor


Issues i am having

- Get dropped packets
- Inconsistent ping
- Have to reboot superhub
- Bad lag spikes when pc gaming
- happens when in modem as well

I don't see any real packet loss in your traceroute or ping monitor.

Inconsistent ping is normal on VM, that's just how the technology works. If you don't like inconsistent ping, leave VM. Your graph looks like your area is above average in congestion and hence will be worse than most, but not terrible compared to some other users here.

Rebooting the Superhub - that I don't know about.

Lag spikes while gaming - again, that's normal on VM. VM are the worst major ISP for gaming. If you want gaming performance, leave VM.

Power levels: look OK, upstream could be better...

upstream level is not the best yet not the worse but as qas said it could be better.

call VM and get a tech booked to sort out upstream levels.. no harm in trying. your SH might be shot.. have the tech replace it too if it wont cause you too many issues with regards to your own settings.

is your SH in modem or combo mode. how you connecting devices.. is it a wired/wireless issue?

My superhub is general in combo mode as i have network storage devices, but recently i have started using it in modem as it seems to work much better with a better internet experience. I have 1 computer on the network which is wired, and 2 storage devices which are connect via wire. I do have a attunater < not sure if that is what its called, on the end of the cable wire which then connects into the super hub

Get yourself a router. Cheap option... d link 615 - ebay. High end your spoilt for choice have a search round the forum. Even if you have a software firewall.. A router makes things a lot more secure.. Setup required on units not already configured. Not a bigger you can easily set up passwords.

the dropped conenction might be getting caused by the upstream power level flucation but if my memory server me right techs can do anything to lower the upstream power levels it has been done at the headend but they do need ot raise it, well that what i was told a good few times that tech cant fix upstream power levels

The user can be moved to a lower attenuation tap, but then he'd need a FPA fitted - which is arguably better.

i think sometime the problem is other taps are worse or just as bad and it requires work at the headend to lower the area power levels but i always though that was option but techs tell me differently lol so i suspect there jsut too lazy too

what do you mean? The engineer doesnt just move round random taps hoping one has lower upstream power, the taps are rated differently, see here

still wouldnt be a problem, although your cabinet has a stupid amount of splitters, users can still be moved around taps
