Yes we've already made some improvements to wireless reliability in the last R30 firmware update and the upcoming firmware includes new wireless drivers which should improve things even further. As soon as we've finished our internal testing we're planning to open up a beta test for this firmware which we'll announce on the forum.

Will this improve the superhub or not ? Discuss.

Curious, I swear I heard them preach that months ago...

it will probably improve but the release could be a long way away, it was a very slow process to the R30 release from R25.

I guess that's the beauty of proprietary SoC's and proprietary firmware...

please with network upgrades let this be the 1!

But does new firmware mentioned above include the resetting of the SH to defaults? My understanding is that they've identified a condition where this occurs and a trialling a fix.

My understanding is that they've identified a condition where this occurs and a trialling a fix.I think the condition is connecting it to VM coax and applying power.

The only thing they "fixed" in short order was the apparent problem of packet loss from pingtest.net and close off telnet access which they'd left available in error. The pingtest.net issue wasn't even a real problem and I'm convinced that all they did was turn the flood protection off regardless of the GUI setting. It took best part of a year to add modem mode to the GUI and find the memory leak in the wifi driver which made it so unstable.

i think it will improve the shub current poor performance but I am still not expecting it to be on par with current decent routers.

There is no new Superhub. There was almost one but it got binned. Would have been made by Huwei.

Wrong, that was the VMDG485, a second supplier for the original Superhub.

We're talking about a completely different device. If you read the link posted above (and the other one you subtly deleted), you'd know it says:

You may be aware that Virgin media tried to bring out a Superhub 2 last year but it was brushed under the carpet because it failed dismally.

Now they are planning a new another attempt at bringing out a new Superhub 2, this time it may have external antennasI'm not sure what's up with your (as a site) attitude, but it appears if you mention certain things your posts will get secretly deleted without notice, warning, or explanation.

[Edit]
Oh, NOW there's a message there, it certainly wasn't there before.

either way the modem side needs upgrading with this new firmware.. was it on the wish list?

craigj2k12
09-03-2012, 17:22
nope, I dont think VM are bothered about it, as long as it "works" thats fine, you could try opening a thread on the VM forums and I would quite happily put my views in, as im sure others would

VM *are* updating the firmware to improve wireless still (or rather to stop violating wireless standards) so it doesn't look like they've abandoned development completely.

craigj2k12
09-03-2012, 17:40
yeah but they arent aware of any modem problems

awaiting reply after craigs insightful post > http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Up-to-30Mb-broadband/Future-Firmware-Update-To-Cure-SuperHubs-Modem/td-p/1085487

Not going to happen. Every VM cable modem has been buffering ridiculously large amounts of upstream data for at least a decade.

thenry
13-03-2012, 14:15
as long as security isn't compromised whats the big deal here? surely they can implement something better?

qasdfdsaq
13-03-2012, 15:34
Read about bufferbloat.

Chances are someone at VM already thinks what they're doing is "better" for you.

that sucks!

a reply from Mark_Wilkin with regards to the SuperHub modem issue..

We're close to being able to trial the new firmware for the Super Hub, if this issue is confirmed to be in the new firmware we'll investigate from there. I'd recommend applying for a spot in the beta test when we open applications and seeing if this issue still exists with the latest firmware.

Thanks
