Hey all,

Posted about this in another thread but it's apparently unrelated to that topic.

I'm in the Burnley area and I've been experiencing intermittent internet downtime all day, my connection works fine at some moments and then all of a sudden it'll drop entirely and I'll slowly get access back over the next 10-20 minutes, like websites come back one-by-one (usually beginning with Yahoo.co.uk, at least from my perspective). I've reset my modem and router, flushed my DNS repeatedly and none of it is having any effect. Furthermore, my modem lights all appear normal.

Anyone got any idea what the issue may be? I was provided with an attenuator the last time an engineer was called out, and I've tried with and without it, and it makes no difference.

Do you guys think this is a temporary thing or should I contact tech support? I would rather not have to deal with tech support, but if it's the only option I guess I have no choice hehe.

Cheers for any advice you guys can give,

KsE

Update:

Tried changing my DNS settings using OpenDNS in the brief moments of functioning internet connection and everything seems totally fine now, guessing VM's DNS servers are malfunctioning perhaps?

Either way, this problem's alleviated for the moment anyway, but I'm not a huge fan of having to go around VM's own systems just to access the internet.

Same here, light flashes on router. Disconnect it and plug it back in and its fine.

There's some kind of routing problem, UK websites load in a flash. Accross to the US and there's no connection at all.

I think Manc is having problems, seeing the results of many traceroutes ive done. I also tried to check the status on the virgin media site via phone, account details and postcode and it says i don't have a service. In the my account area, i click service status and it says "oops".

Im using googles DNS but i have this problem.

Traceroute to Speedtest.net (Based in the US I believe) :

Yep, I'm experiencing the same thing on OpenDNS too now, I was expecting more people to be posting about this which is what has me a little concerned that this may end up being a problem that is difficult to diagnose.

Just restarted the router and modem, seems to have sorted something out. Ill post again if anything changes.

Still happening, got an engineer scheduled for Friday, hopefully they can find a fix for this as I'm stumped and apparently so was the Indian guy I talked to. Ended up calling back to retentions to sort out the engineer visit as the Indian guy I talked to said he couldn't schedule a visit for me.

At least there's some forward movement, I suppose.

Why won't these offshore idiots ever arrange for an engineer visit, does it go against them reaching some quota or something?

You can spend ages trying to get some sort of result from them only to have them say they cannot help you and hang up the phone which leaves no option but to try retentions and hope to get to speak to a UK agent.

VM think they save money but they are really the most expensive option as they do absolutely nothing to earn their pay.
