View Full Version : Increasing packetloss and ping

I'm in the Crawley area and my connection is suffering from high packet loss and high (and increasing) ping.

Is this a local issue or more widespread?

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-thumb/f3253d8000d52e957f33bf254e20e06c-29-11-2011.png (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/f3253d8000d52e957f33bf254e20e06c-29-11-2011.html)

The service status page just gives me a 'We're sorry this isn't the page you wanted' error message!

got a call back buck and then got cut off! the guy wanted to login and start toying with my settings, no chance dude.. its the network. apparently everythings fine, all faults fixed.

Still plenty of packetloss, so not exactly "fixed".

2.1Mb - 30.2Mb download, but generally stable upload of around 4.7Mb.

My 50Mb connection is normally very consistent (consistently good that is!).

I get upgraded to 100Mb tomorrow... that'll be fun!

yeah our area wasn't bad until this kicked off, pings improved recently too. offshore wont call back I guess, they haven't got a clue about the fault.

Not sure if this is related, but my connection has been pretty shocking recently (streaming from Youtube/iPlayer is impossible)

Web was all but unusable last night from 6pm -10pm in Hertfordshire.
Same this morning at 6am.

Nothing from Virgin, no area faults reported, nothing on thier web page to say any issues. If its the same tonight when i get home from work, ill be looking at changing provider

It looks like the bump sorted itself around 11:30pm (by which time I'd hoofed it up to bed :))

Just clarify, the packetloss this morning (shown above) was my 50Mb -> 100Mb upgrade.

I didn't realise that the monitor snapshot also updated in real time :)

My speeds are fine its just the packet loss that is making BF3 unplayable.

Thier fault line this morning said known issues in En6 to En10 areas (includes me). Would have been nice if the Indian call centre worker had managed to tell me that last night instead of working as intended and my 0.2 speed was due to many people online in my area

I put in my phone number on the status checker (an 01293 number) and it shows broadband problems reported yesterday at 8:24pm with a resolution due Midday tomorrow.

The fault reference is listed as F001817827

It is also showing a loss of channels on the TV service for a similar time period.

@soupdragon...

with a connection that bad have you considered using ADSL or 3G or even dial-up instead? I sure as hell wouldn't still be with VM if mine was that bad.

Sorry I missed your reply yesterday.

My monitor looks a little twitchy, but I've seen worse.

Unfortunately my switch to 100Mb turned out to be a switch to 6Mb :dozey:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-thumb/da957816df9edb89170d420f5bc54fe2-03-12-2011.png (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/da957816df9edb89170d420f5bc54fe2-03-12-2011.html)

The packetloss is a superhub reboot, a vain attempt to improve my connection, which can be seen in all its glory here:

buckleb
03-12-2011, 23:12
Tried the Manchester one and got the same result (file download speeds were also less than 1MB/sec). However, I think I may have found (at least part of) the problem.

My power levels are good, my network monitor shows an OK connection and I'm running the Superhub in modem mode... it's nothing on my network as that hasn't changed.

I powered off the superhub, unscrewed the connector and the attenuator (I have a 15db one fitted) then just screwed them back in again and voila, I have a much better service!

I now have 96Mb wired and 65Mb wireless, which is much bettter than the abysmal speeds I got before. That Ashford server is indeed pants though.
