Just doesnt seem like 50meg , Gaming , ping , jitter

Hey all ,

First off lemme state to everyone here , im new to virgin medias 50meg connection and having been with over 7 different ISPS i certainly can tell the difference in the services. I thought getting something like a 50meg connection would seriously boost my online gaming performance but it hasnt infact i was getting better performance on DSL down the line 6meg , im going to write a few things down on this list of mine.

Theres a gitter result , ive known nothing but bad issues when the gitter is higher than 1 on all the isps ive been with. Its affecting the fluctuation of my ping in game and making it laggy , because its so erratic it makes shooting people next to impossible.

I wasnt 100% sure what part of the superhub settings to upload so i just took it all and made it into one jpeg. Is there anything out of the blue here?

When i was with a company called ZEN INTERNET , the connection was simply amazing as smooth as silk all my games ran without vault it was like i was hooked up to a lan. And comparing that to this is just terrible :/

More speed doesn't = less jitter better ping, that's a good connection from vm

what game you playing and where,s server for the games. i am on 50mb and games run fine no lag or ping probs black ops and mw3 run fine balck ops on uk servers my ping is avg 30 mw3 avg 30-50and on deady server my ping is as low as 8-15

As has been stated, fast download speeds don't guarantee good pings. If I'm honest, Virgin Media don't have the best reputation for good pings. I did have better pings (at peak time at least) with BE, but having said that, I do get 15ms or so quite often.

I will say, your downstream power levels are a tad high, might be worth having them looked at.

I think VM could do a lot better with their ping times, especially as much of the network is fibre optic. But at least for me it is better than when we had BT. With BT pings were always 60 or 70+ms.

Well the issue is more down to the fact that it's a shared service, with relatively little upstream bandwidth available on each UBR - uploading affects pings dramatically.

I've had pretty good experience with BE when I had a BT line - around 19ms pings, but having said that, I often get as low as 10-15ms on Virgin Media, and rarely above 30. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I play WoW and it works just fine :).

Please bare in mind that ping times are only an indication of latency from you to wherever your testing to - so speaking generally about ping times is kind of misleading.

If you are doing several things at once on your connection - ie downloading music whilst playing a game - you can se QOs on most routers, and get programs that prioritise outbound traffic on your PC - this can have a massive effect on latency when gaming - I'm an avid counterstrike player and do this on my own PC

you can also use tools like winmtr and pingplotter to help identify what point on the route is causing issues (if there is one) and contact the relevant people to get it sorted
