Hi everyone,

i have been having problems with my superhub for a longgggg time now. The Hub keeps resetting/rebooting everyday. Last month i realised if i changed wireless setting to upto 54mbps it stops rebooting but i dont get the 30mb i am paying for. So virgin media sent me another hub (3rd one!!!!!) and it is still the same **bleep**.

Will virgin send me a wireless router to use separate so i can only use the super hub as a modem? Or does anyone know why it reboots when i turn it upto 145mbps or 300mbps. It is currently stable at 54mbps but not getting the speed i am meant to be.

here is the connection status:

Virgin will not supply you with a separate router, if you wish to use modem only mode you will need to purchase your own router.

What version of firmware does your hub have ?

the information above refers more to the modem side of things dude as it is related to your outside connection to the CMTS, and your power levels and everything look fine. What speed you achieve internally on your lan (especially wireless) is completely independant of what you get going off to the internet.

All your problems would be fixed if 1) you put the hub into modem mode (disables the routing side of things) and 2) got a seperate router for your routing

I deliberarelty said "seperate" and not "another" because you don't want just "another" router, especially not from VM. It would be a worthwhile investment (talking years here) if you bought your own "proper" router which has been designed and tested properly and you can be confident is fit for purpose (in comparison to the superhub). It is going to cost you £40-50 but it would defo be a worthwhile investment long term.

I would personally recommend Linksys, I have been using them for years and they have never failed me. Other forum members will recommend other brands for different reasons and everyone has their own preference, suffice to say though, I think anything you get will be better than what you have got atm.

i have the latest firmware (R30). A technician is coming out tomorrow again to have a look. If it is still rebooting then i will have to invest in a wireless router as General Maximus said. A bit unfair me having to buy an equiptment thats meant to be supplied by virgin. Oh well.
Thanks guys for replying to my thread anyway, appreciated.

The tech can only swap the hub. pointless

Did you switch the PSU when you fitted the new Shub? Some engineer installed Shubs seem to have had the wrong PSU attached which has caused problems. If you haven't, try using the PSU that came in the box with the replacement Shub.

Honestly dude, I know you don't think it is atm, but it is a blessing in disguise. I think VM should supply the equipment which allows you to connect to their services (modem in this case) but i hate the idea of them forcing other hardware on you which you should be able to choose yourself. The way technology is going these days with all the devices that can hook up to lans and the internet, routing and switching to handle and manage the traffic is key and you should have a device which is suitable for your needs, bearing in mind that everyone's needs are different. I think it is wrong of VM to force equipment on you, especially when it doesn't work. You should have the choice and freedom to use whatever you want. The only reason why they have done it is to standardise the CPE so they can support it because I imagine most of the calls they get regarding connection issues aren't due to faults their end but more to do with the routers which people are using and they can't support every type of router out there.

Anyways, buying your own router is going to guarantee you quality and reliability; you are buying something that you know is going to work. Putting the hub in modem mode means that all it is doing is making you connection to the internet and if you do have connection probs then they are easy to identify and VM to fix.

I hope this link works. It is just a suggestion and this is what I would get if I was you and wanted something decent for a reasonable price.

As I said though, other forum members would prefer d-link or another brand.

You're quite right given what VM say on their web pages:

Virgin Media Super Hub
Discover unbeatable wireless with the Virgin Media Super Hub combined modem and router. Features include:

The best wireless broadband performance available

But the truth is the opposite and when reality eventually strikes home, you'll no doubt buy a decent wireless router and use Modem Mode.
