Since having Tivo installed at peak times i've noticed that my 20MB broadband is dipping to 2MB at times, it might be a coincidence but has anyone else noticed this?

Considering that Tivo is supposedly provisioned via dedicated 10mbps bandwidth seperate to residential BB this at first sight might appear coincidental….. but I wonder about the upstream and whether this is affecting downstream sporadically?
Can you elaborate on what the upstream is also doing?

TiVo isn't provisioned on separate anything from residential broadband services nor does it have any dedicated bandwidth, it's a standard best effort configuration and contends with whatever else is on the channels as normal :)

Unsure why speeds would dip at peak, sounds like a coincidence especially given the TiVo will be on the DOCSIS 1.1 network while the 20Mb will almost certainly be served via the overlay DOCSIS 3 network.

….I refer my honorable colleague to my adverb "supposedly" - predicated on several articles one of which I include an extract from:

Joshua Danovitz, VP & General Manager, International, TiVo Inc., said, "There is a lot of discussion in the cable industry about the need to provide internet content to the living room. Unlike current offerings which provide 'best efforts' delivery of Internet video, Virgin Media has redefined the term 'over the top' by providing dedicated bandwidth for these services within the cable video plant and by unifying the consumption experience for end users.

The only things guaranteed bandwidth are linear tv streams and VoD streams. I do note the use of 'cable video plant' mentioned quite specifically there.

I guess they could, maybe, be using the QoS they have set up to police the traffic shaping to prioritise TiVo traffic, there's certainly nothing in the configuration files the boxes are pulling that proritises them and definitely nothing in the upstream direction this would require a different service flow type.

Obviously that's where the segregation ends, the TiVo's register on the same CMTS as every other set top, and every cable modem not on the overlay network.

Sounds far more plausible than the Tivo VP's and VM Marketing "spin" …..and possibly still leaves the hypotheses for the OP's BB performance degradation on the "debating table"? ;)

If the symptoms are regular @ "peak times" why not power off Tivo box for a couple of days to (dis)prove? Mind you "withdrawal" symptoms may be worse than the BB issue? ;)

Not really, if it were that it would be affecting only when the TiVo were in use. They aren't going to be nailing up 10Mb/s of downstream for each TiVo box :)

The upload speed is better than what it was before, 2.1mb and its usually below 1mb

As of 13.54 today my speed is 19.48mb and upload speed is 1.91mb so its better today will test it again around 7pm. Remember my speed is 20mb (up to) so that is a good result for now.
