What a wonderful service ... The cabinet has both doors open now :-(
What's that stuff that happens? :-)

Not a leading question, but have you tried pushing them to/closed?

You could try the cabinet repair team staple.. Gaffer tape !

That seems to be the official fix in Lincolnshire..

We have one of those lift of covers on ours, and some friend of society stole it, leaving the box to all elements, somebody covered it in a heavy duty bin bag.

It took ages and one appeared overnight.

I wonder if BT or VM would take offence if we got out the generator and TIG ;) :D Just that I recently had issues with idiot vandals

just in case the OP is not aware this is not an official VM Forum so not sure that your sarcastic response was merited when someone was just trying to help. POG (BSc) ;)

Long nose pliers might do the trick, it's probably what the kids used in the first place to open it, the little tikes.

As summers splendour gave way to the winters cool, like giant butterfly wings the cabinet box doors would ebb and flow. The crystallised paintwork in battleship grey adorned the streets of trash. Melodic sounds of corrosive rust filled the air with splendorous tune. And I asked myself one question ... Would this beauty ever cease, or would the cable man like his fellow friend the cleaner become extinct..! ... Oh, sorry, lost it a bit there, the doors are still open :angel:

Peoples perception of humour is lost on those who are taught to skim read ( Graduates :-). If you look carefully, you will see the dunce. Its intention was to highlight the lack of memory I possess. However, if I did offend anyone, I apologise profusely. I just want the cabinet doors shut before someone severs my connection, and I drift back into thought (blank space) :dunce: Sorry Hugh,,, as a punishment I went to close the doors again, but two really big five year olds chased me off :-)

I doubt BT or VM would mind, but their parents might.

I really can't believe these doors are still open. They seem to be a little damaged and can't really push them to anymore. I'm surprised the cables are not damaged. :(

All you need is for some disillusioned youth to come along and set fire to the thing, then when VM have to start paying compensation perhaps then they'll start also paying attention.

Unlikely... the division that deals with the access network have no link to consumer services so would be unaware of the financial effect.

Having said that, there is a program underway to repair damaged cabinet locks/doors and replace with better options, understandably this takes time though.

I'm not really surprised at how poor their maintenance is, because when I moved here five years ago the cable from the path to my home was damaged. They put a temporary bridge in, and its still there today.
They have been good to me though, because I run a host server, and although I have a dynamic IP, it remains static for up to 18 months at a time. My site is for my own freeware which attempts to serve for the Red Cross charity. It supports all my domains my mail server plus DNS, so perhaps that will lend a clue as to why I am so concerned about the doors.
I re-used the link that "thenry" gave me again today. Here's hoping :-)

Are you saying VM have no managers? That would explain a lot.

It's a manager's job to ensure information gets shared and departments don't work in complete ignorance of each other's issues. Or in other words, they are the link.

The only reason for there to be no link would be if there's no managers or they're incompetant.

Reported three times now, and I even fixed one of the doors and put some tape across to keep them closed.
Today they are still open ... Given up :(

A splice pack is permanent not temp

I don't recall a splice pack being mentioned, but the guy definitely told me it was temporary as it runs across the garden slabs. He told me they would have to take them up and bury the cable, but that was five years ago. :( I wish the doors could have a splice pack :dunce:

It's now the 10th of October 2011, and the doors are still wide open. I really can't believe after two notifications they still do nothing. The worse thing is it makes the Grove look more unsightly than it already is. I'm trying to get an exchange from here, and I really believe that people visiting take the sight of the doors hanging open as possible vandalism.

Go to poundland, grab a cheap double pack of epoxy resin (a hell of a lot cheaper than araldite) then glue them shut..

An engineer with a screwdriver will soon prise them open but any passing youth will give them a tug and leave it alone.

Ha-ha, I'm very tempted :) Anyway after I wrote that, I tried contacting them again and finally got through to someone who stated they will be sorted in 48 hours. I'll let you know if it happens. Otherwise the Araldite becomes a reality ;)

It's still open, anyone passing Milsom Grove with welding equipment?
But seriously, I am now closing my account with cable, I've booked a BT line installation, at least I don't need to worry about open boxes again :)

Wait, what?

Are you suffering connection loss? You're leaving Virgin on account of the box being open? Are you sure its a VM box?

Yes, leaving them at the end of this month, the box was open for 2 months, despite many phone calls and emails to them. Finally it resulted in a gang of kids ripping the wires out. Virgin then and only then came and repaired it, costing me a weekend without connection.
Definitely a VM box :)

Yet another example of what happens when you promote short-sighted muppets into management positions. For want of a brief detour to lock a cabinet, VM has lost a customer plus the cost of fixing avoidable vandalism.

You can lead a horse to water, and all that. Still, thanks for sharing this tale with us, RG, it has been entertaining (though not for you, obviously!).
