Power levels seem fine.

Cable Modem Downstream
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 6
Downstream Frequency : 330750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps32Increment4
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.0 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 37.1 dB

Cable Modem Upstream
Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 3
Upstream Frequency : 25800000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 44.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

I've had a search of the forum and it looks as though the "new ucd in effect" message is due to the upstream channel changing? Surely it shouldn't be changing so frequently?

Yeah met that already tonight, caused my modem to desynch from the uBR a few times.

It forces people onto new modulations that aren't "having problems" which of course means it will force everyone onto the new modulation lol

I.e. an excuse to get everyone onto QPSK modulation from QAM16.

I've had a search of the forum and it looks as though the "new ucd in effect" message is due to the upstream channel changing? Surely it shouldn't be changing so frequently? This is usually caused by noise on the line and is not normally anything to be concerned about but, considering how often it's happening, it could indicate a problem that needs investigating by VM. Best course of action would be to post your log messages in the VM online support forum and see what their techies come back with.

Upstream power level has gone up a bit and I've been switched to QPSK.

I've also been using the thinkbroadband ping monitor which shows this (ignore the 100% packet loss on the right, it stopped updating for some reason):

I'm interested but unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it apart from offer advice. I had a similar issue a while ago and, just by pure chance, I found the cause of the problem: I discovered that the white cable running from the modem to the splitter was running parallel to a mains cable. Not only was it running parallel, it was touching for several feet. Once I moved the power cable away, the problem disappeared. In my case, it would appear that the modem cable was picking up interference (noise) from the power cable. Perhaps you should have a close look at all your cables.

Regards

Thanks for the help and advice so far. The cable only runs parallel to a mains cable for just a few cms so I don't think that would be the cause. Oddly everything seems ok now that the upstream has changed to QPSK. I'm guessing there must be some noise (like you said) on the network, as QAM16 just isn't stable.

Well one week on and I've still had no reply on the Virgin forum. Got switched back to QAM16 on Wednesday and the "New UCD in effect" messages started appearing in the event log again. Today (Thursday) the modem lost sync twice, once around lunchtime and again in the early evening. Thinkbroadband ping monitor shows it nicely:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-thumb/84e6a75ec7c7a3f5e3694914702d329c-01-09-2011.png (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/84e6a75ec7c7a3f5e3694914702d329c-01-09-2011.html)

I've now been dumped back on to QPSK.

Connection is poor today. For the last hour or so it seems to keep losing sync.

Upstream power is really high, highest I've ever seen it. It also seems to be fluctuating between 58 and 61dBmV within a few minutes. Wouldn't be surprised if it loses sync again soon. Any ideas what could be causing it. Noise in the network?

It's a borked upstream. I notice that you're in a DOCSIS area rather than EuroDOCSIS *6MHz wide DS channel rather than 8 MHz). It means that the infrastructure is prolly strained and creaking, particularly the upstream lasers.

Defo a schmucked upstream. VM must fix this.

Ignitionnet
05-09-2011, 20:17
Most of the legacy network is DOCSIS Seph. Only ex-Cable and Wireless areas, about 1/3rd, use EuroDOCSIS for the legacy network due to the line cards in use.

Thanks for the replies guys. Surprisingly the connection hasn't lost sync since although the upstream power is now a solid 61dBmV. I'm amazed that it's still coping. Any pointers in how I get VM to sort this? I do have a thread running on the VM community forum (here (http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Fibre-optic-broadband-cable/New-UCD-in-effect-anything-to-worry-about/m-p/702543#M95006)) but I haven't had any help as such so far.

Right guys, now this is going to sound stupid, but I've been having a look at the connections. Everything seems fine in the brown wall box, so I went to have a look under the metal cover in the pavement and there appears to be an ants nest in there. I know its clutching at straws but you don't think that that could have anything to do with it? Damaged the cable? Yes I know it sounds stupid lol.

Sephiroth
06-09-2011, 13:25
I think you'd need to shine a torch into the drop point and see if water's lying there or if the ants have indeed chewed through/into the cable. Aren't ants filled with formic acid or something?

In the first instance, though, you're looking for corrosion, IMO.

Also kill them with that ant spray you get in Sainsbury's. They can't be doing any good!

Jon22
06-09-2011, 14:01
I've cleared the ants out along with quite a bit of mud. The bit of cable that I could see looked fine. Didn't appear to be any lying water in there. The problem must be on VM's end now unless the modem has gone dodgy. Upstream is still sitting at a solid 61 dBmV.

Jon22
08-09-2011, 12:46
Just had a quick look at the service status page and it is actually showing a fault reference number for disrupted broadband service. Perhaps their aware of a problem, assuming that is what the number is relating to.

Infact it may very well be as the upstream power has come down a smidge to 59.5 dBmV, still high but atleast its going the right way.

Jon22

Looks as though they have been doing some work as I've gone from one extreme to another now.

Is it likely that the upstream power levels will rise by themselves once any work has finished or am I going to need an engineer out?

Who knows? This sort of problem is usually on VM's property, like a street cabinet or optical node. An engineer to your home can accomplosh little with the upstream.

Of course we don't see wjhat you see, like the event log and downstream stats.

Thanks for that. The downstream doesn't show any irregularity in the stats, as of course you knew.

The upstream displays the same problems as before - the effects of line noise (which you can see by the dropped packets.

Why has the modem flipped to low power? First, to explain that low power on the intended data stream gives noise (from any source) a good chance. We are seeing this.

When you had high power, it was commanded by the CMTS because it need the power to drive initial ranging data. The CMTS then decides on the power level it needs to overcome attenuation (anywheere in the works).

The CMTS is not going to command such low power because for a start, the CMTS expects to see a signal arriving at around no lower than the 20 dBmv mark (thereabouts, lower for QPSK - someone will correct me if necessary). There's more than 8 dB attenuation between your gaff and the CMTS.

So either the modem isn't seeing power raise commands from the CMTS at initial ranging, or it can't deliver the power because it's defective (and maybe made so by sitting for so long at the 60 dBmv earlier).

So I take back what I said earlier and your next move might be to get the modem swapped out.

I had a long-standing upload speed problem on the 30mbps service. Typically I got 0.2mbps on all 4 machines wired to the SH (instead of the promised 3mbps).

An attenuator on the input seemed to help, but it soon dropped back.

A replacement SH arrived and it brought 3 of the 4 machines to full 3mbps upload speed.

BUT the fourth machine, almost the exact spec as the other 3, and on about the same cable length in the home, refuses to get above 0.2mbps. Cable changes, changing ports on the SH have no effect at all, so I think it must be a Vista problem or a screwy network card.

I googled for answers and found that Vista UL speed problems are rife, but none of the procedures to fix this have helped (including several TCP/IP "optimistaion" programs.

Well after a few days of stability, it looks as though I'm back to losing sync every now again and back on QPSK.

Had a reply from VM tech support and they want to send an engineer round due to:

"I have taken a look at your connection and can see your modem is reporting an extremely high number of power adjustments. I have also checked a number of other customers modems who are connected to the same upstream as you and they do not display the same symptoms, this would indicate a local issue."

I just hope the engineer doesn't replace the modem with one of the non-superhubs (VMDG280).

Although I've got to wait until next Monday for the engineer to come.

I would think he is bound to. :)

If it's any consolation I was surprised to find the VMDG280 to rock solid. Note my wireless devices are only in an adjacent room about 10 ft and a single brick construction wall away. It was not until I started to use a superhub that all the problems occurred.

Thanks Mick. From what tech support have said, is it looking likely that its just a borked modem (even though it works fine most of the time) or something between the modem and street cabinet?

Your probably all getting bored of me posting endless stats and logs :D, but I've noticed something new today. Lost sync a few minutes ago and when it re-synced, I noticed that the downstream recieve power level had gone up 1.5 dBmV, although still well within spec. Now the downstream throughout this saga has been very stable, so why the sudden jump up?

Temperature has dropped significantly so that might be the cause. But your upstream is still problematic and any problems you are having are likely to be due to a noisy upstream.

VM need to fix this.

Just had the engineer round, who was a friendly bloke and he told me that it was an area wide problem that they have been trying to sort for the last few weeks. He's already had 6 calls this morning about the same problem from this area. He also checked the power levels which typically have been fine since last Thursday. He left me his mobile number as well so if it drops again and stays off, he could be here much quicker than booking another engineer. Just got to be patient and wait for them to sort it.

On a slightly different note but still related, we've been thinking of upgrading to 30Mb. I know this would put me on to a DOCSIS 3 platform (along with having the Superhub) but would it help alleviate the issues I've been having? Would there still be the issue of a dodgy upstream?

The upstream could be dodgy if, for example, the noise is caused in a common part of the network - this goes all the way up to your optical node where there could be tired lasers.

you might as well upgrade enduring these issues. i'm sure vm will be nice enough to sort something out for you.

I did actually ring them up earlier via retentions and asked them what sort of deal they could do me. They just quoted the standard new customer price plus the £30 activation fee. I didn't push it any further as I'm not the account holder so need to discuss it with them. If everything is ok, I'll probably ring up again tomorrow and push harder for a better deal.

Bah, not getting anywhere with retentions. They don't seem interested in doing any sort of deals. I've no idea how other people seem to squeeze some decent deals out of them.

Probably because deals were common when nobody had much of them back in the day, but not so now.

It all depends on how much you can backfoot them into a deal. Don't take no for an answer.

The olde "I want a refund for all the trouble I have had over these last weeks or months" is always a good one, but obviously don't accept the usual crappy £5 sorry credit, explain that you have problems for a long time now and £5 doesn't cover that time.

And if they say sure have 30mb and we will send out the Superhub. Ask them on the phone to make sure they reiterate that it will not cost you anything extra, as in activation fee etc. If they say it won't then go ahead, and if they do charge you at least you have something to fall back on to complain about.

Alternatively rather than tie yourself into a new contract with a potentially dodgy service wait until 01/03/2012 when you should get access to BT's FTTC solution.

Have a look at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WNNP

Seems odd to me complaining about having issues by agreeing a new contract with a supplier for the sake of saving a few quid.

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top again but I've just started getting these messages again. Although this time, I believe I may have a cause. Its just been pouring down with rain here (still is infact) and where the cable runs under a narrow strip of gravel at the front, is a little waterlogged now. I know for a fact that the cable isn't in any trunking. Can the fact that the cable is effectively sitting in water cause this issue? Everything appear to be working as normal, its just these messages coming up frequently again.

Nope, it's not specific to you and the cable is plastic so waterproof.

Must be just coincidence then, started getting the messages at the same time it started pouring down.

Ignitionnet

Doesn't mean there aren't problems elsewhere with an open connection to water, could even have been increased use of lighting or whatever putting noise onto the network but it's not likely to be the actual cable itself.
