You shouldn't effect any recordings on a freeview/freesat PVR if you retune..

If you removed it and plugged it into a PC then the files should be standard Mpeg2 or 4 depending on the box..

I know that I have happily rescanned my box (not though a thompson) a few times as the digital switchover has happened and the recordings are safe.

Depends on the original encoding and which codecs you have on your system.. but as long as you have the right codecs the file should play.

Download GSPOT (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and drag/drop one of the files onto it and the program should tell you which codec you need to play both the audio and video portions of the file.
