View Full Version : Phone switch
Ok, I need to ask a dumb question but at least I know I'll get the right answer here. Apologies in advance.
Right, I live in a cabled area and get my broadband from VM. My landline phone is with BT. I want to switch my phone to VM. Will I still need to pay a landline rental to BT (or VM) if I switch?
Sorry, I did warn you :dunce:. Ta.

If you switch to VM you cease making payments to BT and pay the line rental to VM.
Plus you may get a better price on your package if you take all 3 services,
Great, thanks guys.
So broadband L and phone M will cost me £40 instal, £13.50 per month + £12.99 line rental + calls? What happens about the loyalty discount I get?

you'll probably be able to get phone+BB+TV for less than phone+BB
You also need to give BT a ring and tell them you want your phone line disconnected

VM tell BT from what I recall when I switched.

VM make their phoneline cheap as part of a bundle, because it's the least attractive thing they do... poor non-geo rates, and no option to route calls by prefix or preselect, on the other hand, bundling the phone line in their package is far cheaper for line rental.
Alternatively, it seems there is a trend to do away with landline altogether, may be worth looking at the VM customer mobile deals instead.
So BB:L Phone M will cost (after any initial offfers expire), £26.49 per month, while BB:L alone is £21 per month (so the phone line effectively costs £5.49 per month, plus the install, plus any call charges)
Alternatively, if you don't use the phone much

The £5 per month SIM has 100 minutes, or the Simply 8p costs 8p per minute PAYG
Of course, mobile non-geo rates are even worse!
Your best bet is to call in on 0845 454 1111 and choose the option "Thinking of leaving us" and speak to Retentions who will try to offer you a good deal.
Thank you gentlemen. Great advice as usual. I've definitely gotta sort this landline malarky out. An unexpected bill pops up from BT every now and then. Grrrr.
Landline rental - I mean, it just feels like a ripoff in this day and age.

You should also be able to port your BT number to VM but that's not always possible.
