hi, i'm contunually getting slow usenet speeds.

on a 50mbit connection and have tried many usenet providers and am getting up to a max of 800KBs. even though i can go to a speed test and get 6.1MByte/s.

is there something i should be doing? i don't understand it. Never been a problem in the past?

there is p2p management in operation which limits usenet from 5pm till midnight on weekdays, and midday to midnight on weekends, theres nothing you can do to get round it

ftp and http would be unaffected.

No. Unless you use SSL.

i thought it still managed it, even if you use ssl?

it does as it gets lumped into the unidentified pile unless use port 443.

I am getting throttled even when using the giganews SSL service.

it doesnt matter about ssl, it still gets throttled

Nothing like 26KB/s on header downloads! That is like 95% throttling on 20mb lol

Now people will say contention, but my UBR's nodes are apparently not fully used so it's not contention, bloody same crap all the time :)

Thats why if I want to watch something like the biggest loser from the states I use a private torrent tracker it's more reliable.

EDIT: Just as I posted this it went up to a staggering 80KB/s... Orgasms ensued lol

It's designed that way and VM advise its users as such, it has been continually discussed on this site and I am somewhat surprised that the same comments are made over and over again.

I am afraid to say that if you wish to 'torrent' call it what you will then maybe VM isn't the ISP for you.

For me torrenting for TV shows is fine.

I see VM has managed to put a stop on retention of alt.binaries.boneless lol 0 posts ouch

It worked fine up until Thursday last week.

Seems a bit pointless paying for "superfast" download speeds if just about everything you may want to use to download e.g torrents and newsgroups are throttled severely. Youtube vids stutter and buffer in anything over 360p and On-line gaming is virtually useless due to the same throttling. Who needs 50MB for web browsing and email.
I'm pretty sure VM are trying to reserve as much b/w as possible for the TV services especialy the premium content.

It's not just VM who throttle torrents.

Just so I get this right, p2p management stops at 12 midnight during the week? So does this mean that newsgroups will go full speed after midnight yes?

Should do.

i think Chrysalis said that his seems to be managed until 2am, although the official times are until midnight

Using standard SSL encryption before 12 midnight and newsgroups go incredibly slow. But if I use my vpn as well then it goes as fast as is possible. I thought they would have capped VPN connections as well, seems this p2p shaping doesn't.

I dont know what it is but I had some speeds down till 2am but it could have been any isp doing that so I never said it was actually VM.

My next test which I havent done yet is to do from multiple sources, will need to edit my script tho so the tests are on smaller files and on staggered times.

If they intentionally interfere with VPN traffic it would cause considerable problems for them.

They would also have a lot of explaining to do!

So basically if I use VPN with torrents and or newsgroups I should be getting the full speed all the time. Theoretically that is, I don't personally hammer my conneciton 24/7.

VM can't really cap VPN as easily as they don't know what you're doing they just see an encrypted tunnel between you and the VPN provider.

There's nothing stopping them from throttling certain VPNs but you're starting to get further and further down the road of diminishing returns.

I think capturing all NNTP over SSL, regardless of port, is about where it should be.

so basically my 50MB service is only good to use from 00:00 to 09:00

sigh..
