I have a lot of problems with my spine & I will have to renew my bed or a new mattress. I have heard that the memory foam ones are good, but can be too warm. I really just need a good firm one. Any suggestions.:confused:

To us, a full memory foam bed felt like sleeping in custard. We ended up with a firmish mattress with a memory foam topper (the top 2 inches or so). Yes, it does feel warm.

I'd recommend going to your local stockist and trying some out.

That's what we did - the firmness of a Posturepaedic with the comfort and support of the memory foam.

We got ours from Costco - they're not cheap, but they are good value (but try some out at a bed showroom first).

This website seems pretty good for Matressess http://www.mattressonline.co.uk/

I'm planning on getting this one from there when I get a chance http://www.mattressonline.co.uk/Product/Rest-Assured-Trivento-2000-Pocket-Memory-Mattress-P620

Another vote here

for the firmness of a Posturepaedic with the comfort and support of the memory foam.

I did the same about a yr ago and when I sleep in another bed now I wake up feeling like a bag of spanners..

Having been suffering some back problems I researched this subject 2 years ago and uncovered a veritable minefield. I eventually discovered that a memory foam and pocket sprung mattress was the ideal solution for me and haven't looked back. The high street retailers often try to sell you what they call 'no turn mattresses' which only have a single layer of foam on the top surface. They tend to promote this feature as some form of premium benefit when in fact common sense should tell us that all mattresses need to be turned in order to even out wear.

Anyway, I eventually found these people through recommendation and bought a king size La Romantica Madrid mattress for c. £450. I can honestly say and it was the best money I've ever spent on a mattress. Having been through an array of products from the likes of Myers, Sleepeezee, Silent Night etc. over the years, the mattress we have now is in a different league and we'd have no hesitation in buying another or using the same company. IIRC the nearest equivalent we found in Dreams at the time cost c. £1000 and only had a single layer of foam. We did find it took a couple of weeks to get used to the mattress but after that there was no looking back. We sleep in a converted loft which gets very warm in summer but haven't had a problem with overheating at all even in the height of summer. This may be due in part to the thickness of the foam layer as you tend to sink into foam which is too deep and that causes problems. We also use a cotton mattress protector, however, and I think that also help keep things comfortable.

At the time I dealt with the owner Tim Deegan who I found very knowledgeable and helpful. I'm not sure if he's still around though.

Since changing from a sprung mattresses to a solid layered foam ones from Ikea, my family have never slept better.... 25 year guarantee too!

We chose Sultan ones for adequate support. Find an Ikea store and go for a test kip! We did!

We got a new mattress last year after my wife suffered a double slipped disc. Made a massive difference to her.

After lots of (quick) research and a few tests, we chose a Silentnight Miracoil 7 mattress with memory foam top layer, and ordered from here (http://www.mattress247.co.uk/)

I was a bit unsure of the site at first as I couldn't see a secure order page at the time, so I rang them directly. They couldn't have been more helpful, and having placed the order by phone on Monday at 4.50pm the mattress was delivered on Wednesday at 9.15am.

Saved over £200 on the price quoted by Dreams for their equivalent mattress.

Thanks for your help. I was looking at the Silentnight Microcoil 7 I noticed there was a Jupiner or Venus model Which one was your choice. Really a big difference from dreams prices, have to find out if they deliver to Sotland:) Margaret

We have a 2000 spring mattress made up of 2 layers of springs. This is really thick and quite heavy, great fun to turn. Cost ~£1000 10 years back so is due for replacement soon. This was from a local retailer specialising in beds. Lots of them.

You really need to go to a good retailer and try the different mattresses on different bases and have a really good lie down. Some would recommend at least 30 mins on each combination.

The model we got is a Divina Dream. Silentnight change their model names frequently, and also assign specific names for certain suppliers (eg - Argos may get a model called "Venus" while Debenhams would get the same model named "Jupiter").
I queried the names with Silentnight while we were researching and they admitted that they don't have a standard name for each model, as the stores like to claim to sell "exclusive" models.
You have to work on the specifications themselves rather than the name.

I've had problems with my back for many years, even had spinal surgery 25 years ago but has never settled fully.

We've had several beds over the years. Slumberland Purple Seal several years ago was ok, this was replaced by a Sealy Posturpedic, very hard at first until we got used to it, then about 6 years ago a 7cm memory foam mattress topper gave it a new lease of life.

3 years ago we decided that the bed needed replacing and started researching Memory foam mattresses, a misnomer really as they are all a composite with a spring or polyurethane bottom layer and memory foam top layer. All the cheaper products were too soft as Pauls9 intimates in the quote. Memory foam mattresses from reputable suppliers are available with different densities of base and memory foam to get the firmness you want or need, and several of the better manufacturers offer a 60 day free trial of their products.

We eventually bought a King size Tempur adjustable bed with dual 22cm Tempur Combi HD mattresses and I haven't looked back, my back is so much more stable now. Was the bed worth the £3000 investment? It took some getting used to, but for me absolutely yes to be significantly free of pain. You spend a 3rd of your life in bed so it makes sense to get a good one. Is it too hot? Well not a problem we have really had, but it does take longer to warm up than a conventional spring mattress but once warm it does retain the heat.

Thanks I am still shopping around ;)

I don't know if you are still shopping around, but I should warn you about relying too much on trying beds out in a shop. By doing this you can very easily get a false sense of security. This is because it only tells you what the mattress is like to lay on for a while in the shop, and doesn't tell you what it is like to sleep on at all.

Many of the big manufacturers are very good at making mattresses feel extremely comfortable when new. However many have lowered quality over recent years in an attempt to cut production costs. So instead of making a high quality mattress that will last, many now make low quality mattresses with toppings that feel comfortable when new, but will lose their luxurious feeling over time. Pillow topped mattresses are a prime example of this.

My advice would be to stay away from big brand names, and big retailers. And instead shop on line (to get the best prices). Just make sure you ask advice from the retailer, giving them as much information as you can. Most importantly of all make sure you buy from a retailer who gives a satisfaction guarantee that allows you to unpack and sleep on the mattress, as most retailers won't take mattresses back.

They do this so that you can't compare prices, and so that they can have false price promises.
