I have lost patience with the VMDG280

MY VMDG280 modem router has appalling wireless performance with very low speeds and constant dropouts despite all the various changes suggested on this forum. Could someone please advise how I can reset it so as to stop the wireless function and allow me to connect my old wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) instead. A child's guide preferably since I'm not confident fiddling with these settings.

Alternatively could I just buy a (well reviewed) cable wireless router from Amazon for £20 to screw in place of the wretched VMDG280?
