View Full Version : Question about the contents of the "self install kit"

The self install kit that came with the "superhub", came with a nice long ethernet cable.

What kind of cable is it? cat5, cat5e, or cat6? I cannot find anywhere where it says this, not even printed on the cable itself.

The reason I ask, I realised last night that my desktop is connected via an old cat5, that is pulled through under the floorboards. If the cable is cat5e or cat6, it will probably be worth me ripping that one out, and pulling the new one that was supplied through.

No idea and I received the same kit, I would therefore only class it as Cat5.

(i could be shot down in flames for this...)
As far as I know, as long as your not going over 100mbps or over 100 meters there's not much reason to go for cat 5e or 6. So I wouldnt faff if I was you :)

1000mbps will become common soon enough, and the standards don't allow more than 100 meters with any category cable.

Cat 5 has been superseded by 5e and shouldn't be produced anymore.

That said 5e and 6 are relatively pointless anyway, as a proper 5 cable should take 1000mbps. You need category 6a or 7 for anything above 1000mbps anyway.

The kit that VM provided is a good well stocked kit, however I wish the cable cable (the Coaxial) they'd given was one of a useable length, had hoped to replace the 10000m of excess we got given at the original install. :D
