The shop by me has a sign at the checkout saying "due to the VAT rising from 17.5% to 20% all marked prices will have the extra added at the till" something like that.

Pkt of Rizla papers was 33p last week 40p today. nothing to do with VAT I expect.

I bet they add the 2.5% on top of the current total.

If it was purely VAT then it would now be 34p.

By my maths he's added another 20% on top of the already VAT inclusive price. so does that mean it's actually 37.5% VAT on top instead of 20%?

28p + 17.5% (5p) = 33p
33p + 20% (7p) = 40p
You thieving little..

Original price - 33p, which means (rounded) 28p without VAT, and 5p VAT.

New price (assuming same base VATless price) - 40p, which means (rounded) 28p without VAT, and 12p VAT, which works out to a VAT rate of 43%

If they are the standard size ( i.e. not kingsize :Peaceman: ) then the RRP is 25p.

Typically that would give the retailer a margin of over 40% from a cost price ex-VAT of under £12.00 for 100.

LOL Tesco sell them for 25p each or 5 pks for £1.02!

Seriously if I buy 2 pks a week, that will be £41.60 a year or £20.40 a year.
or if you're really stingy £13 a year from the poundshop :)

If I gave up smoking I wouldn't know what to do with my smoking hand. or even my smoking mouth.

Every billion they scrape back off the smoker eats into the so-called national debt doesn't it?

i have noticed this in our local shop in Swansea. They used to have loads of bits and bobs for 99p but since VAT rise everyone of those items is now £1.49.
