Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day (plus 2nd January in Scotland) are holidays on whatever day of the week they fall from Monday to Friday. But if they fall on a weekend, they are rolled over to the following Monday, or Monday/Tuesday if need be.

She's not in Scotland is she? 2nd Jan is a holiday here. Having said that, as it's a Sunday this year, it is rolled over so we get Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th in lieu of 1st/2nd Jan.

Yes, definitely. Saturday 1 January isn't a public holiday because it's a weekend. It rolls over to Monday 3 January. In Scotland, Sunday 2 January isn't a public holiday, again, because it's a weekend. It rolls over to Tuesday 4 January.

Many Scots of my acquaintance will still be thoroughly pickled by that date as well. :D

Yep, but we miss one of the ones in May. There are still only 8 in a year here.

Exept there's an extra one in 2011 for the royal wedding in April, and again in 2012 for the Queens diamond jubille in June ;)

Yep, the SNP administration, thankfully, is not a republican movement and has assigned an additional holiday for us on 29 April for the Royal wedding.

Actually that has made a bit of a train wreck of the calendar in April for us, as our local authority operates a 'fixed Easter' policy for school holidays. The kids are always off for the end of term at the beginning of April, regardless of when Easter actually is, but they also get Good Friday and Easter Monday off - which fall later in April in 2011. So they'll be off altogether for the first couple of weeks of April and then be on 4-day weeks for the rest of the month.

Banks dont work on a Sunday, so no sunday can ever be a Bank Holiday.

It can be confusing, however the best way to look at it is that if any fixed date public holiday, I.e. Christmas, Boxing, New year's and May day falls on a weekend, then the associated holiday is tagged on to the following week day(s) - as happened this year.

The only exception is the Easter weekend where the bank holidays are always on the Friday and the Monday.

Hope this clarifies.
