Good Evening,

So whitch subways do you know are avalible in the world?

In gernamy for example we have five undergroundcitys:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Bahn

You can see the undergroundlines there.

You can post here if you already were in a city in Germany whitch has an undergroundsystem.

We have one in Glasgow. You won't get many German posters on this forum though.

Oh well

This looks like the London Underground

Chris

It's a *lot* smaller than the London underground!

Yes sure

And how old is it?

Chris

It opened on 14 December 1896 ... third oldest in the world, after London and Budapest. Lots of trivia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Subway

What happened to the Orange?

It fell victim to a bout of pointless corporate re-branding, along with the buses and the heavy rail.

Everything's burgundy and cream now (which Mrs T sniffily insists is merely a return to their Victorian roots).

The orange is preserved in a stripe along the subway carriages. Heavy rail trains have a teal stripe. Buses have a blue one. Presumably this is because joe public can't be relied upon to tell the difference in the absence of such clues.

The Liverpool Underground
Only four British cities have underground railways: London has its well-known extensive system, Glasgow has a simple 'circular' line, Newcastle has its Metro (opened in 1980), and Liverpool has a system, part of which was established many years ago but which was extended in the 1970s when other lines were placed on underground alignments. Here, a Class 508 train is seen at Liverpool Central, awaiting departure to Kirkby.

This may be of interest but not strictly about underground railways.

Liverpool's Historic Rail Tunnels

Liverpool was a pioneer in railways with the earliest examples of the world's first innovative rail infrastructure found in the city. There are spurious claims from around the world of first in rail tunnels. Americans claim the oldest tunnel under streets is the Atlantic Avenue tunnel of 1844, in New York - sealed up in 1861 it was forgotten until rediscovered in 1980. London claim the Brunel tunnel under the River Thames. The Liverpool tunnels pre-date any tunnel in New York or London.

I find the London underground not too bad but find it very polluted and stuffy.

I've been on the one in Vienna and Paris too.

And have you ever been in newcastle?

I used the Metro System in Newcastle a lot during my time there, and its very good... The ticket machines are very VERY picky which money they take though some of them dont like pound coins, some dont like 5ps etc.

And how is the metro in Newcasle?

Is it fast?

No as its not all underground. The trains stick to approx 30/40mph.

The subway in Lyons is pretty good as is the Washington DC Metro. The Paris Metro from what I remember has similar problems to London - old and overcrowded.

Yes some of them are very arty - I was in Moscow in 1997 for a concert and we had to go get some passes - we got on the subway and had no idea where we were going to because all the sinage was in cyrillic.

We managed to navigate it after a while with the aid of various maps.

And tragically, chronic underinvestment for decades by incompetant and corrupt politicians, means that it's barely changed since the Victorians built it. Given the feat of engineering it was in its day, were the Victorians to return today they could only be ashamed - disgusted even - by the lack of progress.

Slightly OT, but much as I love Glasgow, the subway is a microcosm of the rest of the city. It needs a major change of direction in the very near future or all the enormous potential will be destroyed. :(
