Virgin Media is now increasing phone line rental going up from £11.99 to £12.24 per month. Any new broadband on 10Mb, 20Mb, 50Mb and 100Mb will be in a new 18 months contract instead of 12.

This is typical.... first mobile phone contracts, now broadband contracts. What next? 24month contracts? Right before 100mbit rolls out too!

That link is not from virgin, this is still current on the virgin media site
"Service availability: Services available in Virgin Media cabled streets only. Subject to network capacity, 12-month minimum term contract. If you cancel during the minimum contract period you will incur an early disconnection fee."
also 25p a month increase on line rental, not really much to write about if it is correct
The standard contract will stay at 12 months.
However the 6 months half price offer on the BB/TV part of a bundle will come with an 18 month contract, which I don't see as a problem personally.

So VM are wrong in doing the same that their competitors are doing??
It just makes commercial sense and will not effect existing customers unless they upgrade.

"Take note that Virgin Media has not yet updated its website and are, at the time of writing, still showing their October deals (due to expire on 31st, yesterday)."

Well it wouldn't be for existing ones would it! None of the previous 1/2 price offers have been as they are an incentive to move from another provider.

Come on virgin - what about us all (existing customers ???) why are we all paying so much more money over 12 months. I had half price 50% of skyworld with free HD for 6 months as a existing customer offer paying £25.50 per month, why can't virgin do the same ?

Existing customers can also get six month offers when adding BB L or above and/or TV XL in return for a 18 month contract. This is slightly different to the new customer offers where it also applies to TV M+ and L as well

There are also some upgrade TV six month offers as well

read the article, the price rise is VAT, not done the maths to see if its all VAT as they say tho.
The contract thing is lame tho.

going on the price increase i say it is the vat maybe 5 to 8p isnt but i am pretty sure it is jsut vat

They most probably justify price increases because the minimum wage has been increased...
They are a business, not a charity, and can vary their prices as they wish. Neither they nor any other non-regulated business is obliged to justify price rises.
If people object to the price increases and feel the products are no longer suitable for them they are free to go elsewhere.

Simple math
VAT is increasing to 20% from 17 1/2%
A service costing 10.00 ex vat would increase from £10.00 + VAT of £1.75 to £2.00 so from £11.75 to £12.00

It is the correct increase to allow for a VAT increase from 17.5% to 20% - it's actually 25.5p increase for VAT so Virgin Media have been generous in rounding down to a 25p increase.

My patience and tolerance appear to be extremely low. Reading the official Virgin data collection forum tends to have that effect on me.
11.99 divided by 1.175 times 1.2 = £12.24 rounded down by.5p

Happens to us all!! Not that I can get on the forum you mention, just in general (saves comments by the pedants.)
Lets see if when the VAT does change, if the price remains the same ;)

£10.20 @ 20% vat is £12.24

so they make .5p over VAT

No - as the updated link in the OP states Virgin has kindly clarified that the line rental prices are not due to take effect until January 2011 when the rate of VAT is set to rise, which is the reason for their adjustment.

Loyalty Discount £7.00 off
Total price £38.00
New deal:
XXL Broadband 50 Meg - £44.70 (12 months contract)
XL Talk Unlimited - £8.00 (12 months contract)
Line Rental - £12.24 (12 months contract)
Loyalty Discount - £20.00 off (12 months)
Activation fee - no charge (free)
Installation charge - no charge (free)
Total price: £44.94 (12 months)
Are these good deal ? Or was I robbed off ? Why is XXL cost more at £44.70 while online website stated £25.00* when taking with a virgin phone ?

Though if you really want to know you are getting the exactly the correct price
You'll find it will actually be £45 for XXL on the bill. £45 - £20 discount = £25
