Had internet upgraded to 50meg last wednesday & have been
monitoring the speed on several websites since.

The most I have ever seen is 23 meg with A 1.6meg upload speed.
Is there any basic things I can do to improve this, as I think it's
a bit poxy to be honest.
I know some of the guys on here get pretty much 50 meg,
do you all have fancy new computers, because mine is about 5 years old will that affect the speed much?
I have tried the tests at all times 8 in the morning, 8 at night & 12 at night
is when I check it normally.
In another post somebody said plug the modem straight into the computer without the router. When I do this the computer saya it is renewing the ip address and never does so I can't get it to work?

When connecting directly, turn the modem off and back on after you've connected it. The device it's connected to (in this case either router or PC) has a unique "mac address" which the modem uses to generate the IP address, which is why you need to cycle it.

If set the slider to 50meg on the general settings page then press optimal button at the bottom.
is that a good place to start?

Yeah that sounds fine, I would just push it to max then hit optimal then modify all network s and then reboot pc. The engineer should have done this for you
