We are thinking of having the internet cable moved to a different room. It will need extending about 40ft and was wondering if and what the cost is for this.

That is VM's standard callout charge and is what you would pay them for putting in a longer cable so you could put your cable modem in a different room. But there are alternatives you can try yourself.

You could put a wireless router with the modem and leave them both where the modem currently is.

You could buy a long run of ethernet cable, leave the cable modem where it is and run the ethernet to the new location. Ethernet cable is effective at lengths far greater than the 40ft you're talking about.

The one thing I wouldn't recommend is trying to add coaxial cable to the setup yourself, so you can move the modem. Changing the cable lengths can alter signal levels and cause your service to stop working. The greater the change in cable length, the greater the chance that the signal level will drift outside its tolerable range.

There is also the homeplug solution.

Thanks for all your input everyone.
The room we want to put it in once had a pc in there and we had homeplug and ethernet from our existing modem point and the connection speed suffered quite drastic.

Our house has terrible wifi connection issues too so it looks like i will have to call VM and pay for the repositioning.

Thanks.

What way did you have the Ethernet setup wired? Ethernet is usually pretty good.

I just ran an ethernet cable from one of the spare ports on the router to the port on the pc downstairs.
I got it from a DIY store as a kit which contained loads of cable along with the plugs and wall boxes etc..

It could be just crap cable and it is about 30ft long at that is the one to the room.

I'd say it's crap cable or a bad connection. Ethernet can manage gigabit speeds at cable lengths of 100 metres.
