Hi all,

I'm staying with folks for a couple of weeks and since i have (upto) 20mb at home its becoming increasingly frustrating to use their 2mb broadband connection.

In fact its so slow I thought that the line was being shared so called Virgin to find out what was happening.

They said my parents are on the "3 for £30" deal which means there broadband comes under the small package which is still just 2mb.

They also informed me that if you download over 250mb the connection drops by 75% and the connection speed becomes approx 512k for the next 12 hours!!

This is between the hours of 9am and 9pm.

What a load of cobblers eh. I can't believe they cap it so low and for so long [mod:swearing removed]

So no spotify, psn, iplayer, youtube or steam for me then. virgin u suck!

PS: Apparently there is charge to be upgraded to the 10mb service.

They don't...the cap on the 2Mb line I believe is only 50%

Ps..please don't try to bypass the swear filter, we are a family friendly forum and the swear filter isn't there for fun

In the end though you do get what you pay for and if you don't want want STM (or a higher level) then there are options

Nope but I'm sure one of the helpful VM staffers we have floating around will probably tell you soon

Well if it was always 2mb i wouldnt have a problem but in this day and age (think of the services i just mentioned like iplayer) you cannot stream on 512k and hitting 250mb between the hours of 9am-9pm are pretty inevitable.

What do you get for 3 for £30, because I thought that was M+ TV, L Broadband (10mb) and M Phone (Talk Weekends)

Hi Ben, EXACTLY what i thought. theyve been on this deal since 2009 at least.
I thought their BB would have gone up to 10mb since i read all 2mb customers had now got it but I called Virgin (customer care - ha!) yesterday and they said we have small BB, medium TV (so freeview pretty much) and medium phone i think. seems a bit unfair to me since new customers get Large BB

Ring 150 and choose the thinking of leaving option and tell them the situation and ask the broadband and TV to be upgraded because they shouldn't be paying £30 for such a low package as that

called 150, closed till monday lol

Broadband s is used when customers call up retentions and say 'sky has free broadband' skys broadband has a 2gb cap so virgin have made there product equally as poor

The 2Mb tier is purely meant for browsing and email hence the stricter traffic management, I would ring up as others have said tomorrow as soon after 0800 as possible to see about getting 10Mb installed.

yeah i realise that, precisely what my folks use it for.

i'm staying here for a few weeks tho. is it likely virgin will upgrade the connection for free?

They'll re-negotiate a bundle deal for them, they should get 10mb bb, Talk Weekends and M+ TV for £30.99 a month :)

hmm sounds good to me but i've been thinking about it and they may have a greater phone package as their retired and use the phone more than the broadband. i'll call virgin in the AM anyway to discuss how much extra 10mb will be and discuss it with my folks when there back from hols on wednesday. thanks peeps :)

I take it that as the speed problem has only reared its head due to your being there that you will be paying any difference in charges as your parents most likely only use the internet for email and browsing. Doubt if they're interested in streaming.

called 150 and went through to the "retentions" department and as mentioned they want an extra fiver to upgrade to 10mb which also improves the speed cap and traffic mgmt hours. i'll have to talk to my dad.

Anyone know how quickly you can get it changed and wether you can keep it for just a month or two? thanks.

I think you need to return to Retentions and ask for the £30.99 bundle as described above and here:

http://shop.virginmedia.com/bundles/tv-broadband-and-phone/phm-tvmp-bbl.html

They should certainly give you that bundle which not only gives a better BB but also a better TV for only 99p more than your current bundle. It will, however, be a new 12 month contract.

The change would be almost immediate as would the new 12 month contract.
