I've had VM installed for almost a week. Most speed measurement websites rate it at under 1Mbit download and upload (I'm on 'L', 10Mbit).

iPlayer (the flash streaming version, not the download version) works very poorly, stalling to rebuffer every 10 seconds or so, eventually downgrading the quality to something unwatchable and telling me the connection is too slow.

While this is happening, netmeter looks like this:

In other words, very inconsistent and spikey. The same pattern happens when downloading an ubuntu ISO or other large file over HTTP.

I'm positive I'm not being rate limited.

My modem says this:

Startup Procedure
Procedure Status Comment
Acquire Downstream Channel 402750000 Hz Locked
Connectivity State OK Operational
Boot State OK Operational
Configuration File OK
Security Enabled BPI+

Downstream Channel

Upstream Channel
Lock Status Locked
Modulation QAM16
Channel ID 3
Symbol Rate 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream Frequency 34000000 Hz
Upstream Power 56.0 dBmV

Primary Downstream Service Flow

Max Traffic Rate 10240000 bps
Max Traffic Burst 3044 bytes
Mix Traffic Rate 0 bps

Primary Upstream Service Flow

Max Traffic Rate 512000 bps
Max Traffic Burst 1600 bytes
Mix Traffic Rate 0 bps
Max Concatenated Burst 1522 bytes

I check this against the sticky, is 'upstream power' suspect? It would explain the download burstyness (ack starvation).

Any other thoughts?

Joe

cableforum's speedtest result:

Wed, 22 Sep 2010 19:35:54 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 6618 ms = 154.7 KB/sec, approx 1275 Kbps, 1.25 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 1003 ms = 1020.9 KB/sec, approx 8412 Kbps, 8.21 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 12181 ms = 84.1 KB/sec, approx 693 Kbps, 0.68 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 16175 ms = 126.6 KB/sec, approx 1043 Kbps, 1.02 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2856 Kbps, 2.79 Mbps

Upstream and downstream are out of spec, upstream should be below 55db and downstream is a little on the high side
