Just curious when 100mbit will start to roll out officially. I know there hasn't been an official date for it announced yet. Just wondering as a general guess, with the current state of the network as it is will do you think that the roll out will start before the end of this year? Or is the smart money betting on a later roll out early next year instead?

We have not dates as yet.

Hi,

I appreciate you have no firm dates but is it likely to be this calendar year?

If you cannot commit to any dates (even rough ones), will it be a national rollout? I live in Reading, Berkshire.

And finally, do you think its likely the 5Mb upload on the 50Mb package will happen ahead of any 100Mb rollout?

So many questions! Cheers!

It could possibly be this calander year or not.

It could be a national rollout or not.

The 5Mb upload on 50Mb could happen ahead of any 100Mb rollout or not.

Even if Masque or any other VM employee knew then they would be bound by confidentiality and would certainly not post on a public forum.

I was just thinking that we are into mid september now and the end of the year is not too far off and still we haven't heard anything. I was just wondering if the 100mbit launch date was set back slightly to next year perhaps.

Depends which year you are on about. Calander year or financial year. VM expect to roll out the 5Mb upload sometime in Q3 which for the financial year starts next month.

VM have said themselves 100Mb roll out will start at the end of the year, I am guessing Nov as Decemember is normally a month VM don't do upgrades been so close xmas, but thats just a guess, we will find out soon tho, looking forward to seeing it in action.

Just a historical question....

Do these upgraded products usually appear nationwide or are they announced when available in some region or other and then rolled out to the rest of the country over time? e.g. when 10Mbps was the new kid on the block.

VM always stagger their roll outs as it easier to iron out issue if it small area has gone live than ging nationwide on the same day.

yeah it will defenitly be staggered, and I reckon they will start nov/dec time.

VM's financial year runs Jan-Dec. (Something to do with US listing I guess.)

I'm on 50MB BB at the moment but I can not see the point of 100MB twice the speed we are already getting - yeah downloading a HD movie will be twice as quick but I just don’t see the point - what do VM see as the future?

I'm to believe in Japan that they have 1GB BB but believe there whole TV/On Demand network is light years ahead of the UK and the US - were we still have cable stb and satiate there TV/On Demand is all streamed via Internet and your recordings etc are stored online.

Is this the VM future and TV/OnDemand Future, would Sky have to think scrapping Satellite Dishes and maybe outsource VM cable lines. uhmmm

At the moment VM don’t have any competition in the BB space both BT/Sky can only manage up 20MB which uses your BT line - most of BT's network is still around 5-10mb with them still rolling out 20mb uk wide.

So clearly VM are the fastest in the land and will be years to come (and the fact VM can now provide BB via Telephone poles means there UK coverage is as good as BT.

BT are currently rolling out their own FTTC, an upto 40Mbps d/l and upto 10Mbps u/l. And it's already live in some areas.
So "VM fastest in the land" isn't accurate, with BT [at the moment] offering a service with the fastest upload speed ;)

"We want to be ready for the evolution of network speeds in the coming years as we roll out ever-improving services, including our 100Mbit/s service due at the end of the year and trials of 200Mbit/s ongoing,"

I'm all for evolution but does VM latest results not show us that not all VM customers are buying into the 50MB and how much will 100MB cost us, plus then once 200mb comes alobg we need a new moden as the 50mb only supports up to 100mb.

If VM came out and said there TV service will be streamed via Internet and you have unlimtied recording etc etc then I think people will be flocking to join VM then bring on 200mb/1GB BB.

70,000 customers is not to be sniffed at.

“We know very well we can do 200Mb and we could do 400Mb. We are launching a new modem by the end of the year that will be 400Mb capable. And that's a vehicle for the evolution of our speed portfolio in the next two years.”

Surely the current docsis 3 50mbit modems could support 400mbit down?

VM boast they have 10m customers right across the board of which 4.2m are BB customers of that 650k subscribe to 20mb/50mb of which 74k are 50mb customers.

These stats tell you the story VM are just not selling 50mb to its own customers let alone new customers so why would 100mb do any different.

Hey I'm up for faster and the trial 200Mb downstream and 20Mb upstream speeds sounds great.

I just see this more a VM Business than a VM public/consumer product.

I just think unless there is a real need/demand for faster BB then I see it harder to sell 4.1m customers are happy using 10mb.

No 100Mb port.

No which is why the next modem will have Gigabit ports and also will be a hub.

No 100Mb port.

It's a Gigabit port on the modems themselves it's the routers they give out that are 100Mbps only.

I'd pay the extra £8 a month but not that install charge.

I though it was a Gigabit port on the 50meg modem

Aparrently so, although Masque's post seems to leave me confused.

When 100Mb is released it will use a combined modem/hub which will have 4 Gigabit ports.

It is indeed a gigabit port

But that doesn't answer the question-can the existing 50Mb modem support 400Mb?

From looking at the internet, the DOCSIS 3.0 modem can only handle a max of 343.04 (304) Mbit/s with 8 bonded channel, however EURO DOCSIS can handle 444.96 (400) Mbit/s with 8 bonded channels. information from here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS) (its a good read actually)

Yes, with a firmware upgrade.
