View Full Version : 20mb upload increase?

Hi,

Normally lurk to read these boards, but haven't seen anything posted about this, so I thought I would register.

I have noticed in the last week my upload speeds are significantly higher, when I saw I was doing 220kbs upload! I'm on a 20mb package and my usual is around 80kpbs. I noticed the 50mb upload increase in another thread, and I just wondered if this was part of a test, or if it was here to stay? Not complaining.

Just done a speedtest and I'm currently getting:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2010/09/92.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

download speed is not great tonight, that usually around 18mb, but upload is way way higher. Anyone else seen this? I'm in the NG area.

If your upstream page says 5120K symbols/second then your area has been upgraded to DOCSIS 2 (6.4 MHz channel width)

nice upload speed but is now causing ack starvation on the ubr I wonder?

I have checked this and yes it is set to 5120k

I was going to ask if this meant it was staying for good, however I've checked my speed today and its gone back down to the normal level (approx 90kpbs up) and speedtest shows 0.7mbps up.

I assume this was just a test after all. Nice to have it for the week though

No idea what you are talking about there. 1.8Mbps is ample to ack 20Mbps and if the guy can get that speed he's just fine to ack a full 20Mbps.

If it's still 5120IK, then the slower speed would be due to upstream congestion/contention, I'd say.

Nope, I definitely think it's changed :( My modem was rebooted at 3am this morning, that's the same thing that happened last time when I got my upgraded, but now it's gone off, and the stupid ready light bug is back too.

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000
Maximum Upstream Channel Burst : 3044

Used to be 1720000

If you had the other config then it would have been around 1.5Mb upload but very likely to just be a test as the is nothing official as yet.

It was 1Mb upload on speedtest, but speedtest is always a bit off. And yeah, that's what I'm thinking, hopefully it comes to fruition soon.

I mean his download speed went down so is the ubr now upstream congested due to the increase in upload speeds.

I would have thought you are going to be on 2mbit up permanently now dude (not a trial). I have been on 5mbit up for the last couple of months now in Lincoln and all our traffic goes through Nottingham so it makes sense you get upgraded as well because you are part of the same "zone"

Given he's hitting 1.8Mbps upstream and has a ping to the server, even with potential Flash delay, of sub-40ms I don't think congestion was an issue.

The upgrades will be upstream port by upstream port due to the granularity of the network.

Oh not suprising.your download it slower..maybe that's why also my 10mb is only 3-7mb now :(((... that's probably because virgin've allowed a higher bandwidth for the upload so they had to reduce bandwidth of the download...:((((((...I'm sooo sad cuz I care nothing about the upload; only for the download...:(((( :P

I probably said the port was saturated so acks were getting dropped.

Can I be saturated in port??? ;)

Is this the start of a rollout or are they still on testing/trials??

Id imagine they are implementing the capability across each Site ID and then testing it. Certainly the upstream speeds are in line with what they have forecast as forthcoming (2Mb upstream on 20mb and 5mb on 50mb). Of course with new tiers and changes will undoubtedly come new STM.

Of coure I was being sarcastic. It didn't upset me one bit.

It was just a pointless, totally irrelevant post that had nothing whatsoever to do with the content of the 3 pages the thread has been going.

FYI there is a thread for the 50Mb speed increase where your post would've been apt.

Looking good, my config file shows my upload speed has been updated, however I guess that can easily be changed again if it is a trial. Didn't Huddersfield already have a trial though? If so maybe it is getting rolled out on the quiet.

Nope, I have been on 20 meg since 2007.

Before that I just progressed to what NTL / Virgin upgraded the tiers to, 512k - 600k - 2meg - 4meg.

I signed up for the SamKnows / Virgin speed trials last year, for part of that trial Virgin sent us the new modem that 50mbit users get :D

50mbit customers in Huddersfield were on 5-10mbit upload around this time last year, if that ever becomes permanent I will have to upgrade just for the upload speed :D

Yup ever since moving to DOCSIS 3 ive been able to download backups from my webserver in France at the full 20mbps with one connection, before i could only get around 250kb per connection to the server.

my area after its recent upgrade. is showing signs of congestion again albeit small, no idea if higher uploads been trialled here or not tho, but if not they need another user split before they do it.
