Hi, I know similar questions have been asked in the past I have searched and read what I believe must be all the threads but I still haven't been able to fix my problem.
I am on Virgin 10mb connection I have carried speed test, which I know are not reliable but several different ones all come back at nothing less than 9mb download.
I am using Grabit along with Astraweb. Basically when I try to download a file my connection goes to 1200kbs immediately, but no higher and then drops off to 700kbs-300kbs after varying times.
I have tried connecting my desk top direct to modem via ethernet bypassing router, laptop direct to modem via ethernet, laptop via ethernet through router and even wireless but still the same. Antivirus and fire wall off or on no difference.
Having spent hrs searching and trying various pc's and things out I have decided to ask on the forum in the hope that someone can help.....Please.!

Daz/T, excuse the silly question, but are you mixing up your Bytes and your bits?

1.2MB (MegaBytes) is about the same as 10Mb (Megabits) (8 bits to the Byte) - just as 1200Kb (Kilobits) = 1.2MB (MegaBytes).

Are you getting mixed up with MB and Mb?

A ten meg connection is around 1.2MB

Cheers better check...Doh!!!!!!

Just carried out this test using speed test from this site

Thu, 09 Sep 2010 12:31:50 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 890 ms = 1150.6 KB/sec, approx 9481 Kbps, 9.26 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 857 ms = 1194.9 KB/sec, approx 9846 Kbps, 9.62 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 944 ms = 1084.7 KB/sec, approx 8938 Kbps, 8.73 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 3042 ms = 673.2 KB/sec, approx 5547 Kbps, 5.42 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 8453 Kbps, 8.26 Mbps

Using Grabit my downloads say 1181KB/s so looking at above have I gotten my bits crossed??

Correct 1181KB/s is bytes. multiply by 8 to get bits which is 9448Kb/s or 9.5 Megabits /sec.

It does confuse a lot of people.

How stupid do I feel got my self far to carried away sorry.

So my connection is reaching its max initailly but I have just tried downloading a file and the same happens.... 1200KB/s for 1min or so then drops off to well currently 47KB/s any ideas this happens every time I am never able to download a full file at my max??

Cheers.

Yes I see what your saying. I am using Astraweb is this a known problem???
Has anyone else experienced this???

My connection is all over the place bouncing around from 0-1200 and anywhere in between.

I never have a problem with Astraweb, how many connections are you using, which servers and how old are the items you're trying to download?

For 10mb you shouldn't need more than 6 connection on the Astraweb EU servers to get full speed, more isn;t better and likely to clog the upload which will slow down the download.

Drop your connections down to 6, if you don't get full spped then increase by 1 until you do

Update!
Plugged laptop direct into modem again today.Disconnected power supply to router. Opened Grabit on the EU ssl server and set connections to 8 got max rate 1200Kbs for two and half hrs no fluctuations at all downloaded approx 8gig of data before rate dropped to 300Kbs guess I had reached my virgin quota!
Will try again tomorrow with router powered up as think this may be causing conflict with modem maybe to close having read about others having same trouble. If not will try other suggestions, didn't want to alter to much at once. :dozey:
