We had one of those connector things (Attenuator?) put on between device and cable line. Anyway after several months of good service the modem keeps dropping the signal, either when I start a download or want to load a website, and it likes to do this at random times.

I have the info from the modem here;

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 5
Downstream Frequency : 331000000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps32Increment4
Downstream Receive Power Level : 2.9 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 43.2 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 2
Upstream Frequency : 29200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 43.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size :

I can't recall what the optimal levels are, does it look ok?

oh and I thought this might be of use;

Those levels look spot on to me, how long have you had this problem and what area are you from.

When your having the drop outs what do the lights show on the modem

last few days or so, must of happened 5 times this morning so far, yet the lights stay steady on the modem. I have rebooted my router (WRT160Nv2), will now check to see there any firmware updates available.

edit, sorry, I'm in Colchester.

i've just updated my routers firmware which was actually quite out of date, followed some instructions from some site I found on google and have switched to OpenDNS too. All seems good atm, touch wood.

Just to test if its a router issue first, have you tried bypassing the Linksys just to see if its falling over, or do you have an old router you could swap out.

Its possible VM could be doing some behind the scenes upgrade work in your area which might be affecting your service but I would try the router first and maybe a different ethernet cable.

it's still dropping out, i'll try without the router. I don't have any other routers, I hope it's not the router, we've had problems before but that was with a netgear router, used to drop out all the time (well it seemed that way lol)

If I start downloading something it'll go for a minute and then drops to 0KBps and the whole connection dies and then comes back after about 2-3 minutes. Interestingly it sorts itself out by late afternoon.

Well if it still does it when there is no router in the way, I would be tempted to give tech support a call, preferable after 0800a.m. as you are more likely to get a uk support agent.

I believe the problem is now solved, I upgraded the firmware again, found an even newer version which I must of over looked, since yesterday evening I have had no drop outs and browsing has been a lot faster too, uninterrupted downloading as well. :D

Thanks for the helpful suggestions though, I wish more forums where like this.
