I noticed at around 10pm my XL BB went down to 5 MB - so I assume I assume my connection is being throttled.

I thought from 4pm - 9pm do Virgin Media montor how much I download and then throttle me when I reach my peak. So not sure why my speed was cut off at 10pm .. am I confused on now this traffic management all works.

If you go over a certain amount between 10pm and 3pm or 4pm and 9pm your speed will be lowered for 5 hours when you reach that amount, even if that carries on outside the throttling hours then will retuen to normal. www.virginmedia.com/traffic (http://www.virginmedia.com/traffic)

Which, in another way, means that if you hit the limit at 8.59pm and 59 seconds you would still be throttled until 01.59am and 59 seconds.

Bummer? Yes but it is 5 hrs from when you exceed the limit during the managed time.

The link above for some reason does not cover XL or XXL, this is a more appropriate link to traffic management:

Yeah looks as if the table has been copied from somewhere else and is to wide for the help page template

It does but as usual our friends at VM still haven't corrected the page ( the text overlays the image).

Here it is in all it's glory though

ok.. but still confused as to why I got throttled at 10pm when the peak time is to 9pm

You were probably capped between 4 and 9 but only realised at 10. This will last 5 hours from the moment you were capped

I use du meter to montor speed and at 9pm it was 20 Mb (as per BB XL) and was still 20 Mb at 9.15 and 9.30 and 9.45 ..then noticed around 9.55pm it went down to 5 Mb .. hence confused why I got throttled.

Hmmm that is strange, unless VM don't take daylight savings into consideration

at 4pm when the second phase of the monitor comes in, do they reset my usage

also my son was watching Sky Player on his XBox so hence reason I went over my threshold, does Sky Player use alot of bandwidth

For the purposes of throttling whatever you had used before 4.00pm would be discounted, cleared call it what you will.

As regards Sky Player, I would not have thought so unless it is HD and then it is a possibility. As I don't use it I'm unsure.

so its 1.10am now - so lets assume my bandwidth was throttled from 9pm-1am to 5 MB shouldnt I be back to 20 MB as the 5 hours has passed

or am I all wrong and I have a problem with my connection

If you got throttled at 8.59pm the 5 hrs won't finish until 1.59am.

If you think you have a problem with your connection a post of the modem stats would be helpful.
