Hey ll got a WebSTAR EPC2100R2 modem which ive had for about 4 years, recently it keeps crashing and sending a poor signal (yellow input light on router)
Is this a good modem? any advice?

Many thanks :)

On numerous routers a different coloured light usually means that the connected device has auto-negotiated to a lower speed on the Ethernet, what Internet Speed should you be getting and do you continue to get this?

Do you have a spare network cable you could try connecting the modem to the router?

Hardly, I'd get on the phone to support ASAP.

Maybe with ADSL but not so usually with Cable. Where abouts do you live?

The power levels above look normal for your connection so the issue must lie elsewhere.

If you call tomorrow or Monday after 0800 on 151 from a Virginmedia phone line or 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line and an agent will run some diagnostics with you.

The problem the OP will have with ringing in is that he cannot wire to the modem direct. It'll be the first thing they ask him to do.

@nick you must have an ethernet lead somewhere as they will have been suppkied with both modem and router.

He has a modem and router which are connected together via an ethernet cable so all he does is take the cable from the router and plugs it into his laptop and reboots the modem.

Which is exactly what I would ask him to do on a call and so would any other agent.

His reply to this confused me. Actually this question has confused me, they must be connected with a network cable.

I noticed his reply but I know what modem he is using which told me all I needed to know.;)

Fair comment.
You would be amazed at how many people give the same answer that he gave to Graham to us when they call in, well maybe not amazed.;)

Not really, I have had dealings on the phone with customers in the past and could perhaps amaze you with some stories.

It was many years ago though and nothing to do with the internet (unheard of then) or PC's.

well i assumed you meant a spare cable to replace the connecting cable?

To use to isolate the Ethernet cable as a potential fault?

Try the original and if required you can always buy one from ASDA or Tesco for less than £3.

All power levels look fine so a call to support is in order if only getting 10Mb.

Quite correct Masque I missed that in the earlier post - My bad.

Also not however no speed test result from anywhere has been posted so we don't knowwhat he is using as his guideline.

Is it speed test.net (which server)?
Is it downloading from gamefiles? etc etc?

Another good test method I was told about is to try downloading something from http://mirrors.virginmedia.com

I would always use the link below as it is the one we are supposed to use on a call and it gives full instructions on how to calculate the speed unlike other sites.
