Looks like the increase to 5mb upload has finally started to happen, at least here in Nottingham anyway (NG11) :D

Woke up to no internet this morning, rebooted modem and got this :

Primary Upstream Service Flow
SFID : 27356
Max Traffic Rate : 5140000 bps

Wack, from what I can read it looks like VM are going to do a 1-10 contention.... so say:
50meg down = 5 meg up

10meg down = 1 meg up

or am I just wishful thinking here Ben or Masque?

But still, 5mb isn't much really, at least, it won't be when BT's fibre is more readily available.

bit of news from the sofa which i have the ok to post here Following the successful Huddersfield and Coventry trials, we've been running some further, successful, customer trials of 10:1 upload speeds, including M and L customers
We're due to be making an announcement on changes to our upload speeds at the end of this month - so please watch this space!

We will be rolling this out across the country in phases starting next month for about 6 months and communications are all in planning now - I'm afraid I can't send a one-size fits all notification but you will be receiving a service email once your upload speed has been increased!

seems low to me.

ignition detailed quite bit of work involved in upgrading capacity 8 fold for these upgrades, a 6 month national rollout would seem to indicate a rushed rollout, eg. just changing configs.

OK they do that and suddenly the network collapses because it is not ready for it, would you then complain about it.?:erm:

It needs to be done in stages so as not to overload and kill the network, yes they could flick a switch but that would be madness.:erm:

I thought they might be leaving the 5mbit for 50mbit until the 100mbit lauch, due to the fact that there was no mention of the upgrade for quite a while. Is 5mbit upload rate for 50mbit still possably on the card before the official rollout of the 100mbit connection?

True, but the upload speed would only be 10mb....I say only, compared to 1.75mb, that'd be dreamy, but still, it wouldn't be AS high as the fibre offerings from BT, from memory (I could be wrong mind you)

|Kippa|
01-09-2010, 12:36
BT might have higher upload rates with the new fibre offerings, but VM appear to be more generous with the ammount they allow users to upload/download. Chances are you might get a faster upload speed with BT but not be allowed to max it out for long periods of time and/or quota.

How is that possible? surely, what vm advertise and the configs placed on our modems by the ubr are the same.

10Mb= upto but not over 10Mb because of the modem configuration file
20Mb= upto but not over 20Mb because of the modem configuration file
50Mb= upto but not over 50Mb because of the modem configuration file

How can you achieve higher than what's available? Are you in a trial area with larger bandwidth capabilities or do you have an adsl connection?

If adsl then what speeds do you recieve compared with what's advertised?

As a software tester, things need to be tested no matter how small. i work for a bank and they did release small changes with no testing but even these can cause major outages so now everything is tested/checked even text changes.

defects (problems) in testing cost £10-£100 per day to fix defects in live can cost £1000's per hour to fix!

if VM did the Big Bang approach and "flicked the switch" and this caused a nationwide outage think of the cost and the chaos this would cause.

Yup!

Just noticed that my XL (in Plymouth) now hovers around 1.5Mbps, on the up. Virgin Media as communicative as ever. I mean, what's the point of covertly upgrading people without some trumpet blowing anyway?

I get enough junk post and emails from them. It wouldn't be such a strain to just send out a circular email, telling customers what's happening to the service they pay for..... would it?

Not that I'm ungrateful for them FINALLY addressing the pathetic upload speeds. :dozey:

Upgrading 20mb to 25mb would be the best marketing-wise as none of the competition except for BT Infinity could claim to be faster. I can't see the 50mb being upgraded to 100mb AND 20mb users being upgraded to 50mb, would be nice though.

Hurrah for leased lines :)

For those on the forum interested, what are the costs for that and what link speed have you got?

I second this question :).

I'll make a guess at about a grand per month. A Leased line is intended to be used by Businesses rather than Residential customers hence the cost.

http://www.virginmediasofa.com/files/virginmedia/imagepicker/a/Annika/creating_a_bundle_500x400.jpglast friday we launched a brand-spanking-new virgin media cable service sales website for new and existing customers. The site is called shop.virginmedia.com (http://shop.virginmedia.com/) and it replaces the old allyours.virginmedia.com. We’ve made it a whole lot quicker and easier for customers to choose and build a bundle that’s just right for them.
We’ve also launched 2 new tools: The build order tool for new customers to build their own bundle (see image below) and the change package tool for existing customers to view and manage their cable services.

And that's got to do with an upload increase on 50Mbit how exactly? ;)

Masque was right. My trial lasted a week, hurrah . Back to 0.5Mb/s upload.

Me too. back to 1.6mb up :mis:

On the plus side though, if that was a taste of things to come, then bring it on :)

As Masque has already posted, it could be just a trial in your area...

You won a coconut!

So are they going to actually implement this any time soon, or are they just tormenting us (further), at the risk of receiving another jiffy-bag of dog doo-dah through the post?

.... and should we expect the price hike before or after the upstream upgrades? ;)

Does anyone know if 1.75 upload is the new upload speed for 50MB or is this testing for 100MB -I guess the 50MB modem can also support 100MB ?

So, does this mean the speed I am getting at the moment will only be running for so long?

maybe, maybe not its hard to say what they r doing atm but it seems they r just performing tests in certain areas.

As far as I know 1.75mb has always been the upload speed i've had on thr 50mb service, so would assume this is the nowmal upload speed, except for the trial duration where it was 5mb.

SideWeaver

Correct GordonD. It does look like they will roll out 5mb as the upload speed on 50mb.

Heh I'd love to build a pod just for the hell of it...

As cheap as it is (for that much storage) I still don't have a few thousand just laying around for such a project.
