Three-part "contemporary remake" of the classic "Shelock Holmes", starting at 9pm on Sunday on BBC1/HD, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch (who???) as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson... and written by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who, The League of Gentlemen).

Seen the advert a few times, looks like an interesting modern twist on a classic.. Will definately watch

Will also definitely watch...I've only JUST seen the Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes film...thought it was OK.

Don't think I will.

I've read the article in the Radio Times and I'm just not into pretending that Sherlock wasn't a repressed Victorian and it's just an excuse to cut the costume budget IMHO

Watched 15 minutes or so and left it on record so I'll watch it later.

Sherlock reminded me of that Harry Potter guy in the movie.

I watched 15mins and turned it over....far too slow for me. And I was really looking forward to it aswell...

Well I watched but really I think they just used the Sherlock name to hook the story in the public mind.

Why didn't they just write it as a straight series and leave out the SH references? It would have worked just as well if they had worked at it.

Kinda fed up with the way some people don't have the courage to just be original..

When people bother to do so it can work very well,Being Human is a prime example.

Absolutely fabulous, a modern uptake onthe story, kept the audience involved with the highlighted clues as to his deductions and really cemented the relationship between the two

I have not managed to stay awake to watch much TV lately but Sherlock was well worth the effort.

I really enjoyed it, however I think there is a bit of a Doctor Who vibe from the modern Sherlock, his behaviour mainly.

i thought it was the best thing to come out of the beeb for a long while .I thought it was interesting putting Sherlock Holmes in modern times with modern technology and seeing how he would use it .Looking forward to the other 2 episodes .

Could it make a full blown series like dr who ? or would it spoil it?

I enjoyed it but missed the first 30 mins so no idea if it was slow to get going. Only thing I wasnt that keen on was the text/maps etc popping up on screen. I thought it was good how even though it was modern they seem to have managed to keep it how SH should be. I think the whole "gay" thing was a storm in a tea cup, I found those scenes in the cafe amusing. Looking forward to the next one now and good to have something decent to watch on a sunday night, cant beat Top Gear followed by this on a Sunday, big thumbs up from me

Any decent series would be good on a Sunday, Sunday evenings are cack for TV

If it is successful then short series as per Frost would be better as it keeps the interest and expectations up.

Had to watch Top Gear on BBC HD later that night because the SD version of Top Gear (on earlier) clashed with Sherlock and my wife loves it.

I must say that i think it's very good can't wait for the next episode.

Interesting take but I didn't like the messing with the actual story "Study in Scarlet" which wasn't simply the murdering antics of a psychotic cabbie.

Mycroft isn't very accurate either, being a person who never leaves his club.

I think it's to be taken as 'loosely based on' rather than an attempt at a faithful adaptation. There is too much about Victorian society that simply doesn't translate into the early 21st century. If you take it for what it is rather than trying to compare notes with Conan Doyle's original stories, I think it's a hugely enjoyable piece of TV.

One of the most delicious ironies about it is that throughout the 70s and 80s comparisons were drawn between Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who, especially in the relationship between the Doctor and his companion and between the Doctor and the Master. Now, we have a new Holmes which is being made for TV by several of those who have been most closely involved in the new Doctor Who TV series at BBC Wales - episode 2 was even directed by Euros Lyn, who has 11 full-episode credits to his name since 2005.

Nah!

Anyway I'm not sure about Moriarty.Too effete for my liking..

I rather like the love hate relationship between Holmes and Watson though.

Very good finale, much better than episode 2.

Moriarty wasn't what I was expecting, however.

I persevered with Eps 1 & 2 and decided it wasn't for me. However after reading your intriguing post I suppose I must now watch Ep 3. :)

Luckily it is still languishing on my PVR.

Moriarty was superb. He's so unlike what you were expecting to show up on screen, and at the same time is probably what a true sociopathic criminal genius would really be like.

If that ending doesn't open the way for a full series then someone in the BBC has missed a great opportunity.

My wife and I hated Moriaty!

We thought episode 1 was great, episode 2 was a bit dull. Then episode 3 was pretty good, until the last 10 mins when it turned into pantomime rubbish, bad enough to put us off watching further episodes :(

I read that it's been picked up by a US channel for prime time, so that should give the BBC enough money to milk it.

excellent news, loved all 3 of them, especially the twist at the end but to be honest I saw that coming when he came in to the hospital lab room though I was brought up on Poirot from a young age. Even better news they will remain 90mins long, cant wait
