Not sure what is happening in the Warrington area but my internet speed is terrible at the moment, speed is up and down like crazy.

I'm getting this for a while:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2010/07/12.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

And then it will be OK for a few minutes, then it's bad again. Can't stream video, and web sites are taking an age to load. I'm supposed to be on 20MB!

Even posting this took ages.

I think this may have something to do with a phenomenon known as "the Sirius effect".

Basically when the Sirius effect kicks in it has been reported that up to several gazillion gigabites of data are compromised / rerouted to his Large Hadron Collider Browser MK III machine in his shed.

In the past head ends have been known to go into meltdown and total power outages in central Manchester are not uncommon as result of the excessive streaming.

It appears to affect Warrington particularly badly.

The only possible cure would be to start a Warrington residents / broadband users campaign to have him either locked up or deported.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Have you tried the things on this VM page (http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Fibre-optic-broadband-cable/Speed-Problems-Read-this-checklist-first/td-p/43763)?

Yes been through those, makes no difference, still crap.

Have taken all the suggested steps, the speed is even worse at the moment.
Less than 0.25MB sec, and it took over 5 mins to get this page up to reply.

I called VM support, not a great of help, just asked me to do all the things I have already done, made no difference. Tested the modem, apparently all OK.

They said it is a busy fibre!! Well that is OK then!

A bit of background may help.

Are you the sole user, or are there multiple users in your house?
Is that through a cat5 cable, or wireless?
What equipment do you have (modem/router)?

Sole user, Cat 5 cable or Wireless, I have tried both, makes no difference.
It is a VM 20MB modem the one they send out for free, small, black, square.
It appears I can stream video at the moment, but surfing is really bad.

It has been fine all day then after 6pm it is really poor, just the same as it was yesterday.

Latest Speed test is better, but not great, see the upload speed:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2010/07/10.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Ping Test is also poor, got a grade F earlier:

---------- Post added at 22:30 ---------- Previous post was at 22:28 ----------

Here are the Ping Test ratings:

A - An excellent result! Expect all Internet applications to work very well assuming you have sufficient bandwidth. Use Speedtest.net to see.
MOS greater than 4.37 (Example - a ping below 50 ms with 0% packet loss)

B - Very good! Your connection should work well for any Internet application. Some online games may not perform optimally.
MOS between 4.28 and 4.37 (Example - a ping around 90 ms with 0% packet loss)

C - Acceptable. Your VoIP quality will suffer some, and you will have a disadvantage in many online games. Most streaming media will be fine. You should try testing again to another server close to you.
MOS between 4.00 and 4.27 (Example - a ping around 150 ms with 1% packet loss)

D - Concerning. Most online applications will not perform well but should function in some capacity. Try testing to other servers to verify the result. You might need to contact your ISP for help.
MOS between 2.50 and 3.99 (Example - a ping around 300 ms with 3% packet loss)

F - Very poor. Real-time Internet application performance will suffer greatly on such a connection. Test to other servers to confirm the result, but definitely talk to your ISP about troubleshooting the issue.

I'm getting D or F consistently.

Just for your interest, I too am having issues in Warrington, it peaked on Saturday night with download speed indicating 0.01Mbps and pings through the roof.

Its still crap now but it is marginally better

Something is obviously out of whack just don't know what, maybe there is some back ground work going on that we don't know about, but checking on the vm site only says the V stuff service is down.

Checking my line condition using the myvoip site indicates huge packet loss and Jitter in excess of 100ms on the upstream.

Fingers crossed it will be sorted soon

Well bugger me, coincidence me thinks not

Ok and this is purely for investigative reasons, what area of Birchwood,

The reason I,m asking is that on Saturday I noticed a VM van at the green cabinet on Admirals road (just up from the fire station) and since then the connection has been dire.

They appear to have done something today as performance appears to be restored.
There was a brief outage this morning when I lost service totally, maybe they did a reboot somewhere! We will see what happens this evening.....

Type 192.168.100.1 in your web browser

if prompted for a username and password use "root" without the coma's

from there you will able to look at your modem power levels, etc etc including a log showing everything your modem has been up to.

Maybe there was a firmware update, who knows but it might point to something.

Just being a nosey git really :)

---------- Post added at 11:56 ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 ----------

I will nip home at lunch and have a look at mine, just out of curiosity more than owt else.

---------- Post added at 12:40 ---------- Previous post was at 11:56 ----------

Right I think Ive got to the bottom of it,

The problem with the upstream port we are both on is that its over utilised, on top of this there must have been upstream noise on the network causing the upstream modulation to change to QPSK a few days ago.

After checking my logs Ive noticed the modulation has now changed back to 16QAM, thus freeing up the bandwidth and returning normal service.

Apparently when the modulation changes from 16QAM to QPSK the maximum upstream bandwidth available is about 8Mbps for everyone on that upstream port, and if youve got several hundred peeps on the same port it easy to outstrip capacity.

This is just my take on it that is.

Hopefully not, also I ran a few tests whilst at home and the Ping and Jitter have returned to normal.

Not that normal was very good but you know what I mean :D
