DLink DIR-615 Plug query

Could someone tell me what the purpose of the little square at the bottom of the plug is..have no clue what it's for.

Does it light up when plugged into the mains, if not then it serves no purpose.

No it doesn't..it's translucent though..does anyone else have a virgin dlink-615 plug with a similar,apparently useless feature?

Possibly on other models it is a power light, but as it serves no function ignore it.
