Today I got my vbox. There was no aerial socket to use my PCTuner so engineers asked if I have a HDMI in my screen as it will work, I do not have to have a TV, PC Screen with a hdmi input will do the trick...

Are they right?

Well as you can use a LCD/Plasma TV of any size as a monitor the should not be any issue but you will still need a TV licence.;)

The PCTuner card should have a composite in, this can be connected to scart with the audio from the scart going to the soundcard line in

My TV Tuner has only aerial input and s-video...

Ok, but what about the sound? At the back of Vbox can see only optical audio out :(

If i use a PC Screen with speakers, will it work when I connect it with a HDMI cable?

Or is there any other way I can connect sound to my PC...

if you have passive speakers built on screen then just plug the 3.5mm Jack Plug to Phono Cable into the socket http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/3.5mm-jack-phono-cable-1m.html
done.

A PC monitor with an HDMI input & built in speakers should work fine with an HDMI lead from a V+ box.

The sound quality will depend on how good the speakers are, off course.

1) VM no longer supply the pace boxes.

2) Even if they do, Customer services have no ability to specify what box the engineer gives out.

So why did I get a Scientific Atlantic Box at my install last Saturday?

Stuart

Was it a V, or V+? If it's a V+ (or TV Drive), I believe that VM may still be installing reconditioned Scientific Atlanta boxes.

Also, it's worth remembering that Cisco now own Scientific Atlanta.

You could also use this - a Scart to RF converter

http://www.pulsat.com/products/Mercury-Universal-Video-RF-Modulator-(Scart-to-RF).html

Be aware though that your PC will only be able to tune to the STB channel. It won't be able to pick up BBC 1 - five seperately

So a Scart to S-video connector (e.g. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=35910 ) would work?

BenMcr
23-06-2010, 16:09
That would work for video only . With the SCART to RF it would also carry audio

Cool, I have not thought about it!
Found this on ebay even cheaper:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RF-MODULATOR-C...item2c5411da71

Will it work for 100%?

Be aware though that your PC will only be able to tune to the STB channel. It won't be able to pick up BBC 1 - five seperately

Yes I know - will have to use vbox to change channels. I am fine with that

Thank you all for your support!

Sorry but how is this V M fault? So if I lived in a flat and buy a shed or conservatory this would be the suppliers fault?

I think the point is the salesman advised it can connect to his PC monitor...

Which is he has an HDMI connection and built in speakers then yes he can.

What the Op is trying to do is connect it through his TV tuner via RF by the sounds of it.

I would suggest if the OP is not desperate for TV then wait for Virgin's Online TV service at the end of the year to see if that meets his needs any better, rather than signing into a contract for a TV service that may not even work to its full potential.

You haven't said whether your PC monitor actually has an HDMI interface - if money is no object the get one of the fab 24" full HD monitors with HDMI that are available - even relatively cheap ones like my ASUS would do

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-VH242H-Gaming-Monitor-Black/dp/B001TH8OYW

I don't use the monitors built in speakers, so can't comment on their quality, but the picture quality is great :)

Bought this adaptor on ebay and... it is working!

So: for everybody looking for a cheap solution: SCART -> RF DOES work

Thanks for your support, especially for BenMcr for this suggestion!
