The question is this.

Does this sites 50M speed test return true results?

I've used it a couple of times and only get returns of 20-25Mb even though I know my connection is running at 45-50Mb.

Is the test flawed in some way?

I'd like other 50Mb users to test it themselves just to see if anyone actually gets a true report of their speed.

Here's 4 test results (I had just done the manual download check and got a 6MB average)

There aren't many speedtests i found that can hit 50mb, most of the speedtest.net ones report 20-30mb, i think the london one is the one that always reports 50mb for me.

But when i download stuff from known high bandwidth sources like Apple, games from steam or game patches from gamershell.com, i quite often get 5-6MB/s.

Try downloading this call of duty demo from http://www.gamershell.com/download_21400.shtml The first UK server on that list is only 7% load and i'm getting 5.9MB/s right now.

yeah I expect the london speedtest server is hosted on gigabit, maidenhead is quite possibly hosted only on 10mbit or 100mbit but a busy server.

even if the server is gigabit its not easy to allow it to give consistent 50mbit results as requires decent uncongested transit/peering links, tbb has issues with VM on speedtests and they use gigabit servers.

I may consider hosting a gigabit hosted speedtest link (I remember the port 81 speedtest I did on here some years back for peolpe to speedtest around the old proxies and remember people reporting faster speeds than from a speedtest hosted on VM itself. :) )

These results appear to be quite fast - this page could possibly be in your browser cache.

mine are the same as yours pip, even when my connection is OK and I hit 50 on other sites, this sites speedtest tends to average around 20Mbps for me. I did question it before but I think the question got lost in my thread :)

Masque has mentioned a good point to me in another post. Besides running a speed test from this site if we all ran another from this site http://www.virginmedia.com/testmyspeed/manual.php that way it would be a common benchmark.

I averaged there (again) 6MB = about 48Mb/s

This site's speedtest sits on a not particularly maintained free included hosting server on ex-ntl which hosts a ton of free websites with no SLA.

There is no guarantee of performance at all so it may work just fine one day and be poor the next.

If the tester returns a low performance it is definitely extremely wise to re-test elsewhere.

Hoped either youor Seph would drop in.

If you've got it flaunt it! If you haven't don't!

Admittedly I used it a couple of times and could see the results were flawed (the point of this thread).

I have also seen users new to the forum posting the results they've got from it.

Anyone can use it (member, non member, logged in or logged out etc) but as this is a help and support forum should it be giving a false impression to those who know no better?

If it doesn't nor can't support 50Mb then they should change the tab to (20M)- (50M) if you're lucky.

As the thread is about the speed test provided being flawed then I presume you agree.
