Hi!
I have received a new NETGEAR (WNR2000) router from Vergin. Since then my internet speed on my laptop is terrible. However on other laptops is is fair. What could have possibly gone wrong?
My internet package is 20MB however speed is like in the early 80s...
Please help. I am desperate.

Thank you!

go to http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and run the tweak test

Thank you.
Here are my results. Seems like all is fine but my surfing speed is still VERY slow.
No recommendations for me....
What can I do next?

have you tried running google chrome to see if it is faster?
IE8 seems to be getting even slower than usual and this might be the problem

I'm using FireFox Mozila... also very slow on IE.
Downloaded Chrome. Same.

IE8 is fine in my experience.

omrico, :welcome: to Cableforum. Could you run the speed test at the top of this page (or at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php) and post the results?

Is the laptop connected to the router via wired or wireless?

Just to clarify, other PC's connecting to the router achieve decent speeds? Do they connect to the router in the same way as your laptop?

Hey!
The connection is wireless and so is for the other two laptops that I tried here.
The other two laptops achieve much better results (not enough for a 20MB package, but that's another problem...).
I have XP. I might be missing few drivers which I cannot track because I used to have Vista on that machine which was replaced. Anyway, even without these drivers my laptop works perfect in other wireless networks.

RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF

This needs to be on.

Receive Window (RWIN): 65535

This needs to be a lot higher.

At your convenience please re-run the Tweak Test and make sure that you give it the correct speed for your connection, 20480 as it wants it in kilobits not Megabits. It will give recommendations. I suspect you told it your connection speed was 20.

At the moment your receive window is very low and without window scaling as well it'll slow your connection hugely.

Another couple of test provided the following results:
Sun, 09 May 2010 09:37:08 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 4359 ms = 234.9 KB/sec, approx 1936 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 5647 ms = 181.3 KB/sec, approx 1494 Kbps, 1.46 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 10919 ms = 93.8 KB/sec, approx 773 Kbps, 0.75 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 49268 ms = 41.6 KB/sec, approx 343 Kbps, 0.33 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1137 Kbps, 1.11 Mbps

Sorry - also this (which i do not understand:
4. Notes and Recommendations Choose RWIN between 192720 and 512460 (FAQ #586)
If you have GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize registry entry (do a REGEDIT Find) then change it to -1 (decimal)
download/use DRTCP .. (FAQ #578)
Read the tweak FAQ

Observations:
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)

Observations:
Become pingable
if you need basic packet loss tests done
Check tweak FAQ

swoop101

download and run DrTCP from the link and set the rwin to 512460
save the setting and reboot
then see if things are better

Hi swoop101,
Thanks for your help.
I had bad time this afternoon with the internet. Sometimes even my Gmail couldn't load. Also couldn't complete the tests for hours. At any rate, I believe that there is a fundamental issue that I cannot identify.

Here are the results after the RWIN was changed. The results may suggest that it is better, however quality of surfing was not improved....

OMRICO where are you based, if it is Derby, there is an ongoing fault.
Also is it just browsing that is bad? Have you tried an alternative DNS e.g. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

---------- Post added at 21:24 ---------- Previous post was at 21:19 ----------

Also what are your modem stats 192.168.100.1 user=root password=root
downstream upstream and operational config

omrico

I'm based in London.
How do I get the information you are requesting? DNS, modem stats etc?
I'm clueless. Sorry :)

musicbravo

Type 192.168.100.1 into your browser's address bar
click login
username=root
password=root
copy and paste information from downstream, upstream and operational config pages

---------- Post added at 21:40 ---------- Previous post was at 21:35 ----------

Also if you are in N17 there is a fault too

I am no expert on this, but your downstream power looks a tad low for QAM256 (depending on which network your on) Someone like Masque may be able to tell you more

There's nothing wrong with the powerlevels. The problem would appear to lie with the router as the thread title clearly states.

Andrewcrawford23
09-05-2010, 22:16
power levles are fine well inside accceptable levle sbut personal i say upstream is near a bit low but is within acceptabel levels but i suspect eh speed problems ar due to the rotue rnot the modem

musicbravo
09-05-2010, 22:23
Only reason I mentioned power level maybe being slightly too low was masque's post in the sticky thread and as I don't know which platform that is, for QAM256 it is either just within tolerance or a little out.

Some network adaptors have issues with some Netgear routers. Try doing a full reset on the router. This may help you. (By pressing and holding in the reset button. You will probably need to re set-up wireless security after this though.

My Dad's wired PC had this issue with a WGR614 but after pulling the plug on the PC and fully resetting the router it now works fine.

So removing battery and AC from laptop and fully resetting router, may help

This is not based on cast iron evidence, just on a previous experience
