Hi all,

I am currently on VIP and have a 20meg connection. Can anybody tell me the costs of upgrading my BB to 50meg (IE setup costs and ongoing costs).

Also any disadvantages? Will I likely get a more consistantly high transfer rate when my area headend has been upgraded (I am in Colchester and it hasnt been done yet).

TIA

I had an email saying it would be £55 installation fee and then £8 per month on top of current VIP package.

Same here. Is was tempted but can't see the point as 20 Mbps is more than enough for my house hold with current devices and users.

i am a Member of the http://www.virginmediasofa.com site this is what i wrote
I think you should treat you loyal customers the same as new one, s. Been a customer of virgin and ntl and cable tel for over 20 years now. Two month ago I asked for 50mb broadband and the price was £50. I have 20mb now at £37 a month. New customers get 50mb for £38 So much for being a loyal and valid customer.

this is the answer i got
Hi all. A popular idea, for obvious reasons. We do understand the frustration of existing customers seeing better offers for new customers. The best thing to do is call us on 0800 952 8078 so we can go through your existing package with you and work out how to give you the best deal. Sometimes you may have to sign up to another 12 month contract, but if you give us a call, we can talk you through the options.

Thanks for all of the answers, very helpful. I agree that 20Mbps would appear to be enough. I am more interested in the fact that at 50 Mbps there is no capping at all (according to the VM traffic management page).

But Vanman... I totally agree that it all looks a little steep. If it is going to cost me £55 to install/activate then it is going to have to wait quite a bit longer (I dont object to the £8pm however - it would be worth that to me). It would be vital to me that I dont have to sign up to another minimum 12 month contract, what with the volitile economy etc. - If my job takes a nose dive then the first thing to go will be VM.

Thanks again to all.

That is the standard charge for getting 50Mb installed, if you want a Premium service such as this then you pay the price.

But fifty pounds a month extra to upgrade is a bit steep, don't you think? Have you got that right?

Even if you had XXL on it's own it would only be forty pounds per month (including telephone line).

He did not say extra, I think that was his bill.

But even so that is ten pounds more than an unbundled package.

It is £8 pm extra on the bill after install and activation.

Depends on what his package actually contains.

That's pretty much the same as I got (basically as offered in the VIP email), however I also got told I'd get an extra £7 a month off for the first 6 months, so assuming it isn't a case of crossed wires (I did double check), I'm paying £55 install fee, an extra £1 a month for 6 months, then £8 a month.

Which pretty much holds true with my experience when trying to get any changes to the service organised over the phone, I never seem to be able to get the deal advertised/as reported it should be and simply (although in this case if it's right, i'm happy about it:p).
Last time I rang to see about the upgrade to XXL I was told it would be £38 (I think it was) a month extra, as if it was a new additional service, rather than the upgrade from XL.

My biggest complaint with VM, like NTL before it isn't anything to do with the service, it's that I never seem to get the same answer twice when calling them, and the people answering the phones seem to vary so much.

NTL's billing was always confusing to say the least, and the VM brand seem to have carried it on. Was it the same with Telewest?

Why don't they just say "If you have this, this is what you pay" instead of saying £xx for this + £xx for this and then a discount of £xx this?????

Flyboy
04-05-2010, 14:53
The reason is, so that they can reduce the discounts, without admitting that there has been a price increase.

More than likely correct. Still want to know if the issue was the same with TW tough.
