Hi there,

I am currently on Virgin 10mb Cable, and was thinking about upgrading to 20mb. I just wanted to clear up if I would be locked into another 12month contract?

My current 12month contract ended this february

Yes you would.

No you wouldn't be locked into another 12 month contract, only if you accepted the free router for upgrading and even then you are only in a 12 month contract for the broadband and if you decide to leave you just pay the cost of the router.

Thanks for the Reply guys!

One last question, I have my own Netgear WGR614v9 already. But can it handle the 20Mb Speeds? I've heard conflicting reports of people being limited to 1Mb/s Due to the throughput on the WAN Port? Don't know if my paticular version has that issue.

It's running the latest firmware.

I had that router and it could only handle 12Mbps wirelessly before I took delivery of the WNR2000 from VM which works flawlessly. They now send out the D-Link DIR-615 wireless N router which should handle the 20mb nicely if you request one when you upgrade :)

To be honest, 12Mb for the Wireless is fine since i don't really use it, but would i be able to get full speed wired to my computer?

Yes, the ethernet ports are 100mbps

Okey Dokey, I'm just trying to upgrade my BB plan online, through the VM Dash, just reading some of the terms and conditions before i agree:

"Existing Customers will be required to receive Virgin Media's Broadband: Size XL service for at least two months, at the quoted monthly price, following the date of order. After this period they may downgrade to Virgin Media's Broadband: Size L (by contacting Virgin Media customer services).

Existing customer's minimum contract term commitment will continue to apply following an upgrade to the Virgin Media Broadband: Size XL service."

So just to be clear, my next bill should be around £37 - BBXL + Phone L.

And the "Existing Customers minimum contract term commitment" is not another way of saying, complete another 12month minmum term contract?

I generally wouldn't do it online cause they tend to cock up discounts if you do it that way, I'd give them a call tomorrow.

What are the chances of being put on a different UBR when you upgrade from 10 to 20 MB?

I'm sick and tired of the appalling speeds we get every evening on the L package and if upgrading to 20 MB is likely to improve this, then I might go for it.

I upgraded my 10mb to 20mb for an additional £7.50 p/m, i think I am going to pay now £31.50 including the line rental.

Upgrade was done within 5 minutes even though I was told it might take up to 2 hours.

I am now happy downloading at 2400kb/s :D
