All - I'm hoping that this may be useful to anyone experiencing similar problems to me.
From my 50Mb installation a few week ago until now, I experienced severely degraded performance through my D-Link Wireless N router supplied by VM - i.e. speeds of up to 1.5Mbps but when I used my old Netgear Wireless G router - I was seeing speeds in the region of 35Mbps.
I discovered [with the help of a couple of VM installation guys] that my PCI network adapter settings in the 'Speed/Duplex Settings' part [under the 'Advanced' tab in the adapter's properties] were set at 100Mbps but should be set to 'Auto Negotiate'. I'm now getting consistent speeds in the region of 50Mbps.
I'm using Vista Home Premium.
